Looking into getting a back up machine, what do you....

Post by Judy R » Sun Jan 31, 2010 8:21 pm

I've been pondering this idea for some time now, and thought if any body could help me it would be you guys. I'm considering on getting a back up machine just in case. And heaven knows things do tend to break down, and I don't want to be without a machine. Now, here's the question, what type of auto cpap would you recommend for me. I really would love to get your opinon's on this.

I am firmly convinced that when it quits it will be in the middle of the night on Friday which means I can not get any help until Monday!!! I bought two back-up machines. One gets used sometimes because it sits next to my recliner for naps. I run the auto a couple of times a year to see if my pressure is staying stable. I would go with a version that is like what you use for your primary machine. The "feel" if you had to change to the back-up would be the same. Also if you have the software you could continue to monitor your therapy. JMHO!!

Judy, if you're happy with your current xpap, why not get the same one for a back-up. That way, it would be an easy transition, using the same settings, and same software.

Amen to this! After the experience I just had trying out a ResMed Autoset II (I posted about it yesterday), I would get the same kind that you already have/works for you. Or perhaps an older or cheaper model of the same brand. I am still in shock over how differently the two machines auto-titrated, and the Autoset ended up being intolerable for me to use as it resulted in massive aerophasia, which I have never gotten while using my PRS1.

The air delivery felt radically different also, so even if used on straight CPAP, you would be riding a different horse than you are accustomed to and that may not be the best for falling asleep/require a period of adjustment.

For me it came down to finances. What I could afford at the time I was looking for a back-up machine. I felt that it was better to have a machine than no machine at all. A forum member donated an older Tranquility to me so in case my M series quit (like Jerry said it would be in the middle of a Friday night with not help till Monday). This was a great relief to me since I knew, albeit that the treatment would feel different at least I was covered for a short time in case of an emergency. I was able to pick up an older apap, I believe it is a 418, from cpapauction for $40.00. I used it a few times for naps so that I knew I could manage with it. Recently I picked up a ResMed Vantage from cpapauction for a good price. I am now using it as my machine since I seem to do better at this time with it.

This has allowed me to try different machines which if I were paying full price wouldn't be able to do.

Thanks everyone, that really takes a big load off of my mind. The only reason I asked is my machine is three years old, and the way my luck runs, , I'd be up a creek if it should break down. You guys are the best!

When I bought a back-up machine, I was also worried about power outages and I bought the Everest travel machine. I use straight CPAP, and the Everest isn't an Auto-PAP. Still, it's small, lightweight, great for travel and battery operated in case of a power outage. It does feel a bit different from my main machine, but nothing I can't tolerate.
