New to CPAP

Post by Ghoov » Tue Jan 26, 2010 8:49 pm

I'm so glad I found this Forum as I've been recently diagnosed with Sleep Apnea. Last night I did another sleep study to see what air pressure should be prescibed. While I slept horribly at the center (all the wires and getting used to the mask over my nose), I woke up feeling better and more refreshed than I have in years.

I'm getting my CPAP machine on Thursday and am really dissapointed that I have to sleep two nights without it. I'm checking out all the threads here so I can go in for my machine consultation with some solid information. I look forward to reading all the input from veteran CPAPers here

Welcome aboard. You will find some very friendly and helpful people here. Your wait of 2 days is actually not long compared to many. I had to wait 2 weeks to get mine. Good luck, it sounds like you will do well with your CPAP therapy.

Thanks so much Snorkler (Love that name LOL). I really shouldn't have complained about the wait, I mean it's only two days but after feeling so good this morning, I want more of that

After my last sleep study, I only half way jokingly asked the sleep tech if I could take the unit with me! No, many of us definitely understand what you mean!

..Hi, and welcome - Ghoov, when you try on the different masks, make sure to lie down with the mask on your face. Do not buy a mask if you are not 100% happy with the fitting. I am also glad you found this forum - No cpapper(aka hoseheads) can keep it going without the support and information one gets from all the members on this forum

John, I can definitely believe that others have felt the same way as well.

Marietjie, thanks. I ended up with the same mask that I used for the final sleep test and it seems to fit very well without any leaks - I don't move around all that much when I sleep though I do tend to sleep a bit on my face LOL. Good grief! They first gave me one of those masks that are just two holes in the nostrils and it was super claustrophobic - NO WAY I was going to be able to use that thing!

Three nights down and it's been pretty good. I've been waking up early and taking the mask off only to find that I've fallen back asleep so I've got to stop doing that. This morning I was having some pretty vivid dreams. Since my Apnea is solely during REM sleep, I'm thinking that I stopped breathing and that woke me up, enabling me to remember the dreams.... just a thought.

One thing that I'm noticing is that my head/thinking is quite a bit clearer and I'm not feeling so foggy all the time. Here's to hoping that it keeps improving!

Welcome Ghoov,

I know you will find much good advice in these forums! Have to admit wish was somewhere like this when I started out. Have been on CPAP over 2.5 yrs now and am a lifer but its good to see how others are and have coped using CPAP.

2 days for a machine is really good! Wish was like that here in the UK! Have to wait a few weeks due to the procedure that goes through in order to obtain a machine!

I hope all goes well for you

CPAP-Wolf and Grandmma, thanks for the warm welcome. It is nice to have a place to come and discuss this issue as well as read up on what others are dealing with.

I've slept every night with the CPAP and frankly am afraid not to since I now know the problems associated with not treating the sleep apnea. My only issue is that sometimes wake up in the early morning feeling trapped in the mask and need to take it off for a few minutes before going back to sleep. Unfortunately, I took it off yesterday morning and fell asleep without it so upon waking, I had a monster headache (something I used to wake up with all the time but not since starting the CPAP).

I look forward to reading everyone's experiences and issues that may come up.

Hello & Welcome, Ghoov! Glad you found this forum—SO much useful info and everyone here is so willing to help!

You're lucky to have found this forum as you begin CPAP—took me almost year before I found this place and, with the help of folks here, got my CPAP therapy working as it should. It does take time to get everything tweaked and working at its best, so patience is key as one begins CPAP.
