How Important are Leaks?
How Important are Leaks?
I've been using CPAP for about a month and trying different masks. I've settled on the Swift with nasal pillows because it is comfortable and I have no trouble sleeping. My numbers have been pretty good, but my leaks are anywhere from .14 to .30. Is that okay if my AHI is from about 4 to 8? My AI is usually at about 1. My pressure is 7. There is a slight shhh sound when I inhale. I'm on my 2nd Swift mask and I don't think the first one did that. Any suggestions?

If the mask is properly defined in your Elite, IMHO (not a doc) this is too high.paulak wrote:...leaks are anywhere from .14 to .30...
Sounds like a leak.paulak wrote:...There is a slight shhh sound when I inhale. I'm on my 2nd Swift mask and I don't think the first one did that

Re: How Important are Leaks?
They are very important. If there are leaks, whether from the mask or out your mouth, that means your therapy isn't going into your airway but into the outside room air instead.
I use a Swift as well. Might I suggest trying nasal pillows that are one size larger?

Do you know if you have your swift LT set as your mask type on your Elite machine ?paulak wrote:I've been using CPAP for about a month and trying different masks. If so have your tried the mask fit feature which will let you know how much you are leaking before you go to sleep for the night?
There is a possibility that you may be leaking air from your mouth. In which case you have a bunch of choices including mouth taping, getting a full face mask or supporting your jaw with PapCap chin strap from http://www.pur-sleep.com/
Good luck
