New machine

Post by tmbarber4 » Tue Jan 26, 2010 8:30 pm

Haven't been in here in quite a while, I recieved such good information that things have been working well. Now we just recieved a different machine. First I need to get into the settings becaused the machine is used and not set. The new(to us) machine is a S8 AutoSet II CPAP Machine w/ Humidaire 3i. He has a ResMed AutoSet Spirit . The weekly #'s on the Spirit are Auto set min pressure 10 max pressure 13
Then it says pressure 13
leaks 0
AHI 4.6
AI 0
HI 4.6
He uses the optilife nasal,
My second question will the settings be the same on the new machine.
Thankyou so much for your help

I believe that both machines are pretty much the same; the Spirit was sold outside the US and when introduced here was the AutoSet series II. I don't think ResMed made any changes, but I could be wrong.

If it were me, I'd use the same settings on both machines, then review the data on the AutoSet for a few days and see if the results are about the same; if not, come post 'em and see what suggestions folks offer.

Thankyou, do I leave the mask setting on standard? And can you tell me about EPR, that is not on the other machine. It is asking Full Time, Level 3, EPR access on. And also smart start, what is that?

Here's the mask setting charts; they are for ResMed masks. Check your OptiLife mask booklet and see which setting is closest to the OptiLife, then use that setting (I wear the RespCare Hybrid mask and use the MIR FULL setting as my mask's vent rate is a bit higher than any ResMed mask so my leak rate will likely never be 0 ):

EPR is exhalation relief; it drops the pressure by 1, 2, or 3 cmH20 according to which you pick (set). 3 is the max, 1 is the least, and of course you can turn EPR off. Mine is set to FULLTIME and 1...I really thought I'd need more exalation relief as I was intolerant of exhaling against pressure with my former straight CPAP machine but 1 is just right with my AutoSet II.

SmartStart causes the machine to turn on when you breathe into (inhale?) the mask and turn it off when you take the mask off. It is not active when you have the MASK ALERT feature turned on...this feature will sound an alarm when the mask is dislodged or there is a major leak. If you develop a major leak with the SmartStart feature on, it assume you've taken the mask off and will shut off the machine...not good as far as I'm concerned. I have the MASK ALERT set on as that's important to me, it's gone off twice and woken me up to re-position my mask...nice feature.

Thankyou so much Muse, I found this on here I really don't understand how to figure what setting to put the machine on for the mask. I think I have everything else set, so if I know what setting to put the mask on my husband can use his new machine tonight

OK, if it were me, this is how I'd go about this (someone correct me if I'm bonkers please): the pressure range is 10-13. It looks like the OptiLife vent rate for pressures of 10-13 is about 28-32 (from the chart); the closest ResMed masks to that vent rate at that pressure are the Swift LT and Swift LT for Her (31 to 33 at pressures of 10-12). Again, if it were me, I'd chose SWIFT in the AutoSet (an S8 flow generator in the second chart) because that's the closest vent rate to the OptiLife's. This means when you check the leak the next day, you should see it close to 0; if it's higher, then you should try to identify and fix the leak. At any rate, that's my reasoning. My Hybrid has a slightly higher vent rate than any of the ResMed's, so I use MIR FULL and expect to see a small leak, one that corresponds to my increased vent rate. They don't make this easy do they

Muse, Bless you, no they don't make it easy and sorry to admit but this part is way over my head. I will try the swift setting. He can try this tomorrow night and I will let you know, he also says he has no problem breathing out against the air in the auto mode on the sprit so I think I will turn EPR off also to start since we are leaving the settings the same for both. Thankyou agian for all your help.

You're welcome! That's what makes this site so helpful, peer-to-peer help; without all the help given me, I'd still be clueless! Good luck and let us know what the overnight leak was and how he slept.
