Does SleepZone heated hose stops nasal mask's rain-out?
Does SleepZone heated hose stops nasal mask's rain-out?
Hi
I have been experiencing rain-out inside my Mirage Activa (NASAL MASK), this wakes me up several times each simgle night.
My room is at 72 - 73F, the hoses are insulated and there is NO water inside but the Activa is full of water each 3 hours.
I tried to put the fix made with cotton inside the mask but I wake up feeling I was not been able to get enough oxigen (the fix was not obstruction the air way at all) I was choking but breathing the same amount of air (weird isn't it?).
So, I don't know what ill happend with the fix (a modif from sleeping_better for his Swift) I made.
Any way, could some of you who use a NASAL MASK tell me if the Sleep Zone heated hose has eliminated the rain-out in your mask or it works only to eliminate condensation inside the 6 feet hose? I had read most of the people with a Swift or nasal pillows have no more problems with rain-out using the SleepZone but my mask has a bigger surface for condensation been a nasal mask.
I feel I'm ready to pay for it! If that really works
Thanks

Re: Does SleepZone heated hose stops nasal mask's rain-out?
Heated hose fixed all rainout for me -- except for the night I mistakenly had the APAP's humidifier turned up all the way (and got rainout in the mask). I use a Swift LT (nasal pillows), humidifier on the lowest setting, room temperature around 60 degrees. An insulated hose cover had not worked for me. YMMV, as they say.
Good luck! Rainout is really a pain and I found the investment in the heated hose worth every penny.

It stopped mine, and I use the same mask. It's a wonderful thing.
I have given mine to my husband, since he loves the warmth and I like to sleep in a meat locker environment. I need to order another one! The customer service is fabulous.

Absolutely yes........if something happens to my Aussie hose, I'll immediately order another one. Love it.Does SleepZone heated hose stops nasal mask's rain-out?

Thank you Lee Lee.
Scrapper, I had forgoten you told me once you had an Activa mask with your Aussie hose, I was thinking you had a Swift LT. Oh yes I had 1/2 a brain when you told me about that
I think I will order one. I haven't been able to stop rain-out in my Activa although I have non in the hoses and I'm feeling tired to fight with it.

I switch between an Activa nasal mask and Swift LT for Her........but find I have less to no leaks with the Activa nasal mask......IF I wash the cushion religiously everyday

You absolutley have to keep it squeaky clean!
Re: Does SleepZone heated hose stops nasal mask's rain-out?
I wash my mask and the humidifier container every day with baby shampoo. Once a week I put in the humidifier container some vinegar and let it there 20min; I wash with warm water and dish wash soap the long hose once a week too. What I don't do is to rinse at the end with distilled water, I use tap water for the whole washing activity.
I should maybe wash all that with dish washer soap, but I dont like a lot the little smell it lets.

Re: Does SleepZone heated hose stops nasal mask's rain-out?
rosacer,
I have used the Aussie hose for several years now. I bought a backup Aussie last year but so far the original, which is about three years old, still works like new. I also use the activa mask. I did make a short fleece cover for the mask hose to help insulate it. I have no rainout even when the room humidity is high. I have a FP HC150 humidifier set on 2. I use only distilled water in the humidifier. My room is at 71° to 73°. I do wash the humdifier and hose when the urge hits me. Maybe a couple of times a year. And I wash the mask at least monthly. The Aussie hose has been great and stopped all of the rainout I was experiencing pre-Aussie.

Re: Does SleepZone heated hose stops nasal mask's rain-out?
You didn't say what setting you use on your humidifier but I'm assuming that it's fairly high. I have used an Activa mask for two years and even without a heated hose, I've never encountered your significant level of rainout (I run my M Series humidifier at 3 on a scale of 5). The first question you should ask yourself is whether you really need the humidity to be that high. If the answer is yes, then a sleep zone heated hose can be part of the solution for you.rosacer wrote:Hi

I use a sleep zone heated hose with an Activa nasal mask. The heated hose works great. But it's a balancing act between how hot you run the hose and how high you run the humidifier.
The standard power supply with the sleep zone heated hose is 12 volts dc. I found that at this power, it heats the air in the hose too much for my liking. It's kinda like trying to sleep on a hot, dry sunny day in the desert in summer. The air is noticeably warm; I prefer it to be cooler.
With the warmer air from the heated hose comes a need to turn up the humidifier to a higher setting. The reason for this is that when you warm the air, you *** decrease *** the relative humidity level in the hose. Since the objective of using a humidifier is to increase humidity in the air, use of a heated hose (especially one that's too hot) is the opposite of your objective of increasing the humidity.
The solution for me was to replace the standard sleep zone power supply with a 9 volt dc (0.8 amp) unit (advice found elsewhere in this forum). You can buy these at the Source, etc. This reduces the heat produced by the hose and results in air that's only mildly warmer than without the heated hose. The small amount of heat is enough to reduce rainout to manageable levels with the humidifier set at my normal setting of 3 out of 5. Your mileage may vary.
Note that I still get some rainout, but it's no more than a few drops in my mask in the morning. Note too that the short extension hose on the mask, which is unheated, is a complicating factor (I have a hose cover on it). I've never needed to try my humidifier at a higher setting with this arrangement, but I'm certain that if I turned it up high enough, it would induce rainout again.
Part of the trick seems to be to ensure that your room temperature is constant all night. If the temperature drops, then the balance between humidifier setting and the temperature of the heated hose will be upset and you may get rainout again.
Final note: you can buy the sleep zone heated hose without a power supply. This makes the hose considerably cheaper, and leaves funds to buy the necessary 9 volt supply. Before buying any power supply, try looking around your house. you may find you already have one powering a telephone answering machine or whatever (just make sure that it provides at least 0.8 amps at 9 volts DC, otherwise the power transformer may overheat).
Hope this helps.
I'm workin' on it.
Re: Does SleepZone heated hose stops nasal mask's rain-out?
I think Jeeper hit on the other things to try - that is also covering your mask and mask hose. And the room temp. The moisture condenses on cooler surfaces like you see on a window when it's cold outside.
