Lifetime Nasal Mask Users

Post by Paul254 » Mon Jan 18, 2010 8:12 am

I started therapy about six weeks ago. I started with the Respironics FF Comfort Gel mask. The mask tore up my nose bridge. I used this mask on the advice of my DME. It made sense because I'm a mouth breather. It was also her opinion that a FFM delivers the best therapy because it mitigates pressure leaks from the mouth. She also fitted me with the Respironics Nasal Comfort Gel mask. After about two weeks, I switched to the nasal mask w/ chin strap. I also had a cold while using the nasal mask. One shot of Afrin (for about 5 nights) kept me clear all night. There was no nose bridge problem with the nasal mask. The chinstrap keeps my mouth closed throughout the night and my AHI is less than 1.5. I'm feeling great! I think I found my "lifetime mask".

My question is this. Are there any long-term nasal mask/chinstrap users out there? How successful has your therapy been over the long-term? What issues did you face? How did you resolve those issues?

Caution: You need to STOP the Afrin and use a shot of nasal saline before bed.

I use nasal pillows. I trained myself to keep my tongue at the roof of my mouth so NO chin strap. Don't get me wrong, bc of my pressure (18/15cm) I do get spurts I can't seem to stop but they don't seem to affect my therapy or numbers either.

But if the chinstrap is working for you, that's all that really matters.

Chin straps often don't do the job. They'll keep your jaw closed, but not your lips, and lots of air can escape that way. Isn't it possible that the mask size you got was just wrong? It shouldn't be a reason to switch to a nasal mask if you need a FF one as there are loads of different ones available, in lots of sizes.

With an AHI of 1.5, I WOULD NOT make any changes. Obviously the chinstrap is doing the job for you. Keep using the mask and chinstrap until at some point you have leak problems and an increasing AHI.

Hey Paul254

I give you a friend's advice, make a research about Afrin and you will stop it on the spot. Me too I have hard time with congested sinuses but Afrin is a poisoned gift.
