Snuffy Nose

Post by klalman » Sun Jan 17, 2010 10:51 am

I have been using the S8 Autoset II CPAP machine with a humidifier for 4 months now. For the past 3 weeks my nostrils are becoming snuffy every night one at a time which allows me to only breathe through one nostril at a time. Does this have to do with my machince?.
Thx

In my case is not the machine is the type of mask. What mask are you using?

it is actually normal for you to breath out of one side of the nose or the other. You body actually swaps sides often during the day, you normally just do not notice it.

In my case, I sleep on my side, and the nostril that is lowest is the one that clogs up. If I turn over, eventually that one clears and the other one clogs up.

You, of course need a humidifier on the cpap. If you are mouth breathing in your sleep, that will dry out your nose a lot.

A quick shot of afrin or neosynephrine will immediately open them up, but you can only do that for a day or two if you have a cold. You can not use stuff like that every day, or your nose will fall off.

Vicks makes an inhaler stick that helps some.

Fluticisone or Astelin helps some, but you need a prescription.

Nasal irrigation helps some others.

Some have seasonal allergies, fungal infections, etc, that need to be solved for the long term.

Also, the humidifier setting can affect this for some of us. I had the same issue after using my CPAP for many months. Learned here to try passive (no heat) humidifier setting, turned off the heat, no more congestion. I guess the higher/heated humid air was causing my congestion. Good luck!

I have been trying a product called Clear-Ease. It is made of two types of fruit enzymes that supposedly relieve swelling inside of the nose. So far so good, I will let you know if it really works well.

Stay away from Afrin. It can have horrible rebound effects.

Get a good full face mask.

And, take note of what RipVW wrote in his post.
