FOLLOW-UP AFTER TITRATION

Post by LeeAnne in Niagara » Sat Oct 08, 2005 5:22 pm

Is there ususally some sort of follow-up after the titration study is completed. I had my initial sleep study, started on cpap, then had titration. Now the sleep lab is closed and the doctor has moved away. Should I be looking for someone new to take over? Is there a "schedule" of follow-ups that need to be arranged??

LeeAnne,

They put you on CPAP before titrating you? How did they know how much pressure you needed? That is like putting the cart before the horse, no?

I don't know if there is a rule of thumb about follow-ups, but I would think if you are doing well, you won't need to see anyone unless the situation changes. The insurance company, however, who provides your equpment may want to do a follow-up at some point to see if you still need the therapy (like we'd be lucky enough to get cured by using the CPAP). I would imagine, in rare instances, certain conditions can actually change and people don't qualify for therapy-related coverage anymore, like when someone had weight-induced apnea and lost 150 lbs. and is fine after that. Then they would want to stop paying for equipment that isn't necessary.

I have only been on therapy four months and I got one phone call from the DME after 30 days asking how I liked therapy and if I used my machine. They bought me one after that and I've never heard from them again. I did call them to get a filter for my machine and if/when I find another mask I want to get, I will be calling again.

Other than that, I guess they will get in touch with you when they want to make sure you're either still using the equipment or still need it.

LeeAnne,

If I were you I would check with my family physician and if possible let that Doctor keep track of progress with the CPAP therapy for me.

My Doctor makes an appointment with me for every 6 months, but if I have a problem I am to call for an earlier appointment.

I would not like not having the advise of a professional regarding my therapy and health.

Keep us posted,
