Neck problems

Post by giantred » Tue Jan 12, 2010 6:14 pm

I'm still convinced that my neck problems are coming from the straps on the headgear, so I'm now willing to change to using the nasal prongs. I had a successful septoplasty surgery and I'm against using the prongs because they put more pressure on the sinuses and in the past they would bleed under CPAP therapy. However, I am now using a humidifier.
So, do you think I will get the bloody noses again if I use the prongs with the humifier? I use to bleed before the surgery and I haven't had one bloody nose since the surgery. Do you think prongs will be ok? and I won't get the bloddy noses. If so, what prongs can you recommend?

GRed, what pressure range is your APAP set for and what pillow mask do you have?

Prongs really go in in your nose. Another type is pillows - they don't go in deeply at all.

what about your pillow? I had chronic neck problems for awhile that even had me visiting the hospital with numb arms (they thought it was meningitis). Finally realized that my pillow was too flat. I sleep on my side and my neck was bending too far. Slept on two pillows and that fixed the problem, so I later bought one of those tempurpedic-style pillows. Perfect ever since.

It's one of those temperpedic foam pillows. It helps my neck problems when I don't use the apnea machine. However, when I use the machine my neck hurts with the temperpedic pillow.

When I used the Mirage Vista, I got neck pain. It happened when I found myself straining upward to get a good seal. When I adjusted the straps so that it got a good seal without tilting my head backward, the neck pain stopped. I went to the ComfortLite 2 and no longer have those issues.

What type of mask do you use?

I too had neck problems due to my strap. Ended up with chronic pain in my left shoulder, hand, and foot, sometimes with numbness as well.

I switched out my headgear (from my Quattro) to a Softcap. I was able to adjust it so the lower strap sat higher on my neck, almost on the base of my skull. After about a month the pain and numbness was gone except some lingering pain on my neck. A definite improvement though.

During this time my bed and pillow was constant...

If you haven't already you might consider trying a couple different headgear to see if you can get the strap to sit elsewhere on your neck.
