Waking up at 2am with left arm pins and needles

Post by mtb211 » Mon Jan 11, 2010 10:19 am

Hi everyone.

I went to bed and fell asleep last night around 12:15 with my cpap machine, I took an ambien and melatonin to fall asleep, I woke up at 230 pm and never really fell back into a deep sleep. My left arm had bad pins and needles but it wouldnt go away *didnt seem to be from me sleeping on my arm*

anyone know what the deal is?

Matt,

The two times that I wake up with the feeling of "pins and needles" in my arm are when I sleep on it the wrong way and when I gain a little weight and my PJs bind my arm.

What does your data show about your breathing? Apneas, hypopneas, snores, mask leak, flow limitations?

You don't need to sleep on your arm to get that, you just need to sleep in a way that pinches the nerves/muscles, an awkward position for your neck for example.

Of course I assume you have no other symptoms that might relate to left arm numbness? Because if you do then you should have dialed 911 long ago.

Only other symptom is horrible anxiety, What do you mean what does my data say... how can I look at that?

Matt,

In your equipment profile, you show that you have the software. If you also have hardware to read the card, the software will show you how you breathed during the night indicating apneas, hypopneas, mask leak and other data.

Otherwise you can get some data from the display. Here are some instructions from a post by Muse:
Muse-Inc wrote:Your Elite displays data. Press the LEFT and RIGHT arrows and hold for 3-4 secs. The Review menu will be displayed, using the UP and DOWN arrows lets you scroll thru the data. Make a log to write down each night's data: AHI, AI, HI, leak, usage (to track how long you're actually using the machine). It resets at noon, so ck before noon.
If you cannot see the data in the LED, post so someone can tell you how to navigate to the right place to turn on Smart Data.
Your machine settings and mask leak may be less than optimal and you might still be having many lengthy apneas. You need to see some data. It could be that your anxiety is a result of suboptimal therapy leaving you with significant breathing problems while asleep.

Matt, it might be possible you were sleeping on your left arm, aroused (without waking up long enough to remember awakening) shifted your position off your arm, then fully woke up to the feeling of "pins and needles" as the circulation in your arm returned. By that time, you were no longer on your arm, so assumed you had not been sleeping on it -- although you actually had been. Just another guess.

I think these are likely possibilities too:

I don't think looking at the cpap therapy data would do much to figure out what caused that particular feeling.

Agreed. But he is still having anxiety and needs to look at the data. That's what you taught me RG.

From one who is there, as you start to age you may find out that is a practice you need to break. I developed something like tennis elbow from sleeping on my arm. I trained myself not to do it and after a couple of weeks my elbow healed.

This may be why you were having problems in the first place, not from the drug, but from the way you have short term memory loss and can often sleep in a single position with them...hence, you may have very well been on your arm all night before you woke up.

Matt, is there a behavioral sleep medicine specialist in your area? There may be one associated with the sleep clinic where you had your sleep study, or at a major institution near you. A psychologist who understands sleep and anxiety may be of benefit to you.
