Nasal Dryness--Nosebleed

Post by DannyP » Fri Jan 08, 2010 3:52 pm

I was wondering if the colder weather we are having here in Texas now (29 degrees for High ) and having to heat the Home warmer than Normal at night could be causing the problems I am having now with Nasal Dryness and Minor Nosebleed when I blow my Nose ? I have been using the Swift II Nasal pillows and have been waking up with dry Nasal Passages in the Mornings even after using a Lubricate in the Nares prior to masking up at night . I can't afford to turn the Heat down as I have small G'Babies here. I have a Respricare Hybrid mask as a back up and would it possibly help with the Nasal dryness if I use it during this cold Snap ? I have had the HH t a setting of two and was getting adequate moisture until it has gotten colder the past few Days. I think I will use the Hybrid mask tonight and see if the Nasal dryness Improves as I can breathe through the Mouth with the Hybrid. Any Suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you

i use Ayr Gel along with a Nasal Saline Solution everyday. this works for me

be careful with nose sprays. they may work for a week or two but then they can become non effective, or non helpful. i cant remember the medical term my doctor used

i know for me they give me nose bleeds if i use them longer than a week or two

I've been having the same problem. I've never had a nosebleed in my life and now every time I blow my nose, it's alarming to see all of that blood come out. It has been very cold and dry here so I'm guessing my nose is just exceptionally dry with all that air blowing in it... I've been using Ocean nose spray but maybe that's causing a rebound effect and I should back off... Anyone have any suggestions for our poor, dehydrated noses?

I can't tell from your post whether you have a humidifier or not. If so, I would first try turning it up.

Also, before BiPap I would get nose bleeds and putting in a small fountain in my room helped to put moisture in the air, so if you don't have a humidifier, maybe that would help? I am not sure though. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

Also, get a humidifier for your bedroom. It helps. I keep hy humidifier on my unit on low with my Hybrid. During the winter months, I use a room humidifier as well, even when in Florida unless it's very humid out.

I live in Central West Texas, so I completely understand what you mean by dry. I use a humidifier in every room in the house, year round. That would be one of my suggestions to you would be to invest in a humidifier at least in your bedroom. As far as the nose spray, I would be careful, not to over do it. Sometimes they can be more harmful than helpful. You may want to move up the number on your machines humidifier and see if that helps. But, I sure that someone here that knows more, maybe of more help for you. Welcome to the group.

I had nosebleeds as a child and they happened all the time. My son has had them since he was little. If I keep a humidifier in his room I can reduce them to about 10% of what he normally gets. I also have ayre gel for him to use and plain old saline spray. Saline spray is great because you can keep a bottle at work and if you carry a purse you can keep one in there. Don't wait till your nose it dry to begin moisturizing it as it's already too late.

Ok, folks, here's a tip from my ENT for nasal dryness to the pt where you get bleeding: drink more water, you're dehydrated! If memory serves, we lose at least a quart of water a day via our breath, if it's suddenly more dry where you live, then you need to increase your water intake.
