Titeration on Monday

Post by sleepyprofX1 » Fri Jan 08, 2010 1:46 am

So I am having my second sleep study on Monday.
What should I look out for?
After the study is done, how long does it take to actually get a mask?
I am planning to fly overseas to visit family on Jan 20th or 22nd for 3 weeks- how do you guys travel with such a device? Do you think I will have a mask in time if the Study is on Jan 11th?
My grandma is very sick requiring radiation.

Thanks

I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother's illness and wish her the best with her treatments and you with your travel as a new cpap user.

Every place is different as to timing. Ask them on Monday what their usual schedule is and tell them your circumstance. Maybe they'll expedite things for you. Some places give equipment the morning after, others it can take weeks. I would suggest you tell them up front you want a data capable machine so you are not away if there are 30 day return policies etc. Let them know you will be away and not have access to their assistance so will need to have data in case you run into trouble.

The night of the titration you will be wired up again, and a machine and mask will be added. Some have a miserable night, others say it's the best sleep they've ever had. Hard to predict. Oh yes, ask them for hard copy of your prescription in case you run into trouble while away and need to make an unexpected purchase. And find out what type of power cord or adapter you will need to use the machine where you are going.

Mine took longer to receive. The time from sleep study to machine seemed the most annoying ,so plan on it being a pain and anything easy will be a gift.Your taking care of your issue even if you don't get your machine before your trip, as said above holding out for a data capable machine for me made it a much easier thing to doThanks to all who instilled that as a must have item from the start, it really is.

Hi, considering it can take a few weeks to get the machine after being titrated, I think it might be a better idea for you to wait to get started until you come back from your visit. Travelling with the machine is not always straightforward, depending on which airline you're using, and for a newbie, probably needing to think about electrical adaptors once overseas, never mind Customs these days, etc., it could be a bit difficult. I also think that you could run into just small things re the machine or mask when you're gone, and not have access to your DME (or MD) until you get back (though we're always happy to help you here . I would suggest, however, that wherever you end up sleeping (unless it is a hotel) that you try and sleep in a more upright position (as in a recliner) that flat, and/or on your side vs your back, both of which can help if you have no machine. And I'd be very careful about not drinking coffee or anything acidic for a few hours before bed as if you do have GERD like so many of us, at least not having to deal with that overseas will also help (as would a TUMS before bed).

If you do get your machine prior to leaving and want to take it with you, then do read up here on travelling with Cpap and be prepared, if necessary, to contact overseas dealers for help if necessary (they do seem to be all over).

Let the sleep lab know about your schedule and if all possible that you need the machine prior to departing. The only thing standing in your way of getting the machine/orders ect is the sleep lab scoring the test and writing the order...
