First Nighter with a few questions

Post by abev » Sat Jan 02, 2010 8:06 pm

Hello everyone, I had my first full night on my new machine and have a few issues. I use the REMstar M-series basic with heated humidifier, and comfort gel nasal mask. We keep the room pretty cool at night(58-60degrees), and live in Oregon, so lots of moisture and rain. I am having a problem with rainout, specifically in my mask. I don't know if it is "true" rainout or moisture from my breath, but I get condensation in my mask and it sometimes sprays through the exhaustion port and makes a whistling/wheezing noise a simple wipe fixes it, but it get annoying while trying to sleep. I also wake up with a wet nose an upper lip ad it is a little uncomfortable. I made a fleece hose cover as a temporary solution with no luck. Any thoughts? Thanks for the help

That's rainout.........the fleece is a good start...... You can also turn down the humidifer some, take the fleece covered hose under your covers with you, turn up the heat in the house..........but the sure fire way to end the rainout is to purchase the Australian heated hose from www. sleepzone.com.

The rainout was a definite negative to me--I would replace the heated hose in a minute than put up with the hassles of rainout.

Welcome, sorry you're geographical rain is not exclusively outside:

You may want to try:
Avoid over filling your humidifier tank.
Lower the humidifier setting
Use the humidifier as a passover: Water in tank is not warmed.
Set your machine below bed level and keep hose upwards so water returns to tank vs. accumulating to gurgle and blow toward your face.
Not use your humidifier at all.
place a small piece of gauze or other material to absorb the condensation in the mask w/o blocking vents
Keep working at it until you discover your solution.

Well, there is that last inch(es) where rainout happens. And, its the hardest part to work on, since hard to cover mask and not block the exhaust ports or cause other problems. Sometimes its about find a different mask or making mask mods.

For instance the slit that is the exhaust on the UltraMirage II, whistles .... while the exhaust on the Activa LT stayed quiet. But, they don't make a cushion that is equivalent to the Shallow Wide (the LargeWide of the ActivaLT wasn't big enough)....so I switched the elbows. Still kind of annoying the moisture bleeds out the sides of the cushion contact .... but at least the exhaust is quiet.

But, I had passive humidifier (until the dryness in my nose and sinuses made me turn it back on)...I have hose cover and hose heating... machine lower, etc. Though I keep the bedroom cool.....

Though this year my bedroom has been warmer than usual...and that seems to have helped with that rainout. But I don't know how long the neighbor below is going to keep up with heating my bedroom.

Oh yeah...I had switched to nasal mask from nasal pillows partly because of this....it was so much more annoying....plus I could see the inside of the pillow fogging when I exhaled....but I'm back to nasal pillows...
