Day 1 wasn't so bad- S8 Auto, set to 13 CPAP

Post by river_terror » Sun Dec 27, 2009 1:22 pm

Finally got my machine and was scared to use it but it actually went pretty good. Had it on for 6 hours and did pretty good excpet for a dent in my forhead from haing the mask too tight. Reading were AHI 4.6, AI 0, HI 4.6, leak .18. Not sure if that is good but at least I got started. Bought the clinical manual and software but still need a reader. Was confused looking at the LCD data screen as it showed 13 hours usage and 6 hours run. Now I'm worried that the AHI was calculated using 13 hours verse the 6 hours so it it actually twice the 4.6 reported. Does anyone know which is used to calculate the AHI? Can't find it in the manual. I used a full face mask but have a Swift 2 nasal I want to try but not sure if it's ok to use with 13#. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Welcome aboard.

The numbers on your machine are usefull especially if you are having problems. But I would concentrate more on how you feel now that you are on cpap.

So how do you feel after your first night of cpap use?

Those are excellent numbers. Excellent.

Apnea Index - 0 (perfect -- no apneas)
Hypopnea Index - 4.6 (nearly perfect with a ResMed machine -- very few hypopneas averaged per hour.)
Leak - .18 (nearly perfect. Zero leak is perfect. Anything below .40 is ok.)

You won't need "perfection" to have wonderfully effective cpap treatment.

Nor can "cpap" alone take care of every health problem that might make a person continue to not feel "great."

But what your numbers are showing is that "cpap" is doing its part of the job great...keeping your airway open for good breathing while sleeping. Very, very good, river!

Not sure if I feel any different to be honest. Maybe a less tired but I have a cold so I can't tell for sure. Thanks for the relpies. Always helpful to hear from someone that knows what they're doing. Just wasn't sure if I could rely on the numbers since they were showing 13 hours usage when I really only used it for 6 hours. Maybe I'm trying to get in too deep to the data.
