OSA and Bananas

Go Bananas!

One way that may help treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is to increase the amount of a substance called phospholipid in the airway. Phospholipids help keep the throat open. It is known that bananas contain this substance but what wasn’t known until recently was how long the phospholipids from bananas would last in the throat.

A recent study to answer this question was done by Van der Touw and Fewings earlier this year.* They investigated the effect that eating a banana may have on the amount of phospholipids in the airway over time.

Eight healthy women were given a 200 mL banana smoothie (containing 0.286 lb (130 gms) of ripe banana). The researchers took a sample of cells from the patients mouths immediately before drinking, and after 1, 2, 4 and 6 hours, and measured the amount of phospholipids.

The findings showed that before the drink there were no phospholipids in the mouth but even after 6 hours there were phospholipids in most of the cells. This means that the airway may be helped to remain open for at least 6 hours after eating a banana.

Why not try it out for yourself – have a banana after dinner and see if you get a better night's sleep.
Moral of the story – bananas may help treat OSA.

This information about bananas was discussed earlier this week on this thread: viewtopic/t47758/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=47690. You may want to check that out too.

A banana before bed can aggravate GERD and acid reflux in some people.

I love banana's and eat banana's 2-4 times a day, didn't notice any improvements in AHI data. I'm sure banana's have benefits.

Need more facts on the research.

I don't have GERD, but when looking up bananas and GERD found that they are touted to relieve reflux - hummm?? You did say 'some people' : )

Love bananas, but to my surprise after throat surgery the last thing you can eat is a banana. It seemed to clog up in the throat like no ones business kinda like pasta to a garbage disposal and made the throat hurt a lot.Still eat bananas most every day but maybe subconsiously only in the mornings like always.
