Flu and colds with cpap and O2 desats

Post by Woody » Fri Nov 27, 2009 5:20 pm

I bought a recording oximeter a week ago right after my O2 concentrator died. I used it 3 nights without the O2 concentrator
and found on only one night did my O2 desats go below 88% and then that was for less than 20% of the night. I believe readings
like that don't call for added O2. But I just got the flu and now my desats go down to 85% about 20% of the time which puts
me in the needing O2 category. Not urgent but i do need another O2 concentrator ect.

Now to something else isn't coughing a pain in the A** with a full face mask on ! Sorry just needed to rant.

I recently had the flu. I did notice that the number of events my machine was reacting to went up while I really felt crappy. I do'nt have a pulse ox, but I would be my levels were lower than usual.

When I had H1N1 I had desats and recorded asthma symptoms in my sleep via pulse oximeter too. The flu was a rough intrusion for night time breathing and OSA..........Below is my pulse ox one of the flu nights............coughing in the full face is not any fun, but being able to use the machine while ill is a plus, even it it's not idea, it's still treatment.

Coughing wearing a FFm is just plain gross! Turned my humidifier up a bit so less dryness from mouth breathing reduced coughs but got more pillow rainout . Guess I'll add a heated hose to my list of add-ons.

Hi Woody,

I have to "qualify" for oxygen whenever I have a change in insurance, etc. The criteria for my insurance company was 30 minutes of oxygen below 88% each night. I'm like you, I have "bad" nights, but mostly I am not destating. Does your pulse oximeter have alarms? I am moving in December, and likely will be without oxygen through my bipap for about a month, because of a change in insurance, etc. But I feel much better about not having the oxygen because of the oximeter will alert me if my oxygen level is too low. It also is an apnea monitor, and I can set it for times like, if I have a apnea over 60 seconds, it will alarm. I got it finally two weeks ago, after a 8 month saga with insurance and Michigan Medicaid!

Take care. Happy Holidays.
