New - nose pain

Post by Sleepymum » Mon Nov 16, 2009 2:56 pm

Hello everyone

I am a 25 year old current stay-at-home mom (15 month old) hoping to get a job supply teaching. I was just diagnosed with "resistance" (apparently its not technically apnea because my blood oxygen level doesn't really go down?). Went for my titration in the lab last night, so hopefuly I'll be able to get a machine and start feeling better soon.

I'm wondering though... I had a mask that just covered my nostrils (no mouth) and even now hours later my nose is tender. I'm not sure if its from the air or the physical mask, but the tech said it was common. Does anyone know if its from the mask or not? If it is, is it something you get used to, or am I going to have to try to find one that sits differently or something?

Thanks for the help

I'm unclear about where the nose pain is, but I'll try to answer. If the bridge of your nose is sore, a lot of us have that problem. Sometimes a different mask is the solution, even a totally different style of mask. Some use something to pad the nose under the mask, such as moleskin.

If the inside of the nose is hurting, it would be from the air. usually drying the tissues too much. Humidity can help, as well as nasal rinsing or spraying with salline. Hope this helps some.

welcome
its possible to have apnea with no fall in oxygen levels

masks come in a range of sizes and types, your face should be measured

nose only masks should be worn high up on face, push up until mask contacts bottom of nose

it helps to be patient and to have a positive attitude to adjust to using a machine

Ooo... my first post and my first replies Thanks Irene and Harry

The pain right now is on the bit between my nostrils.. seems like such a random place to have pain lol.

And oh I'm trying to be patient.. .just seems like my life has been on hold now trying to get a diagnosis and now with the treatment. Hoping to go into it with as much info as possible

Sleepymum, I'm glad you found this forum. You will find all the answers and support you need. It does take patience, but it is well worth all the effort.

I haven't had any experience with the pain between the nostrils, but my guess is a mask that fits differently might be better. Are you working with a DME? Some will let you try different masks until you find the best fit for you.

Sleepymum, also please update your profile with your mask type and machine you are using. Then someone who has experience with that mask will be able to help you.

Thanks for the reply Gary, unfortunately, I just got diagnosed and so I don't have a machine yet. I was just hoping to see if anyone had any advice before I buy my first. I wish I knew what the mask was that they used at the hospital but, alas, I don't.
