Need Help with Numbers

Post by Weezer » Sun Nov 15, 2009 10:19 am

Hello, all. I've been on CPAP for more than a year, but I can't seem to get my AHI down to anything close to the magical 5.0. My AI is about 2 or more per night on average, and my HI is about 10 and up. My leak rate is fairly low -- though it varies -- and I'm trying to keep it under control with the PapCap. Otherwise, I'm not sure what to do, and I'm nervous about mouth taping. I do have the ResScan software and can upload data screen shots if that will help to "diagnose" my problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, it would definitely help to upload some screen shots.

Weezer, I still feel the same way I did here:

With a ResMed machine I don't think "get the AHI under 5" for effective treatment applies. An AHI under 5 is fairly easily achievable with other brands of machines, but the Hypopnea Index with a ResMed machine is often going to be higher than 5 for many people, no matter what.

That does NOT mean the ResMed user is not getting effective treatment, though. A ResMed user racking up an AHI of 7 or 8 or 10 every night might very well be getting BETTER treatment than a _________(fill in any other brand) user who was seeing AHIs of 1.0 or less.

I personally think the important number (well, besides "leak", which is the most important, imho ) for a ResMed user to look at is the Apnea Index.

The "AI" number. Not the AHI. Just the AI.

If the AI is well below 5, preferably less than 2, I think the machine is treating the person very effectively...even if the HI is registering 10 or so. Just my opinion, and I'm sure not a doctor.

More of my opinion 'bout that... :

Rested Gal, thanks for all those links, some of which I haven't seen. I will enjoy reading through them, now that my brain is less fuzzy, I find this stuff fascinating.

Thanks, Rested Gal. I'll read through those links –- and in the meantime, I'll work on posting a screen shot to see if there's anything obvious I'm missing.
