When Mouth Taping Isn't Enough

Post by BigEd » Sun Nov 08, 2009 5:31 pm

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to prevent my Swift II nasal pillows from leaking? Love the mask and have been using nasal pillows for a couple of years now. My AHI has been creeping up from an initial low of around 2 to its current 22. So I realize that I'm not getting the proper therapy.

Originally my leaking problem was from mouth breathing. But I've been successfully taping to correct that problem. I wake up several times throughout the night from my nasal pillows leaking. My max IPAP pressure is 20, so when my machine works its way up to that level, my mask starts to leak. I use Cann Ease for moisturizing but was wondering if there was perhaps another gel or sealant I could use that would provide a better seal. I have tried and own a FF mask, but have difficulty tolerating that (not to mention I can't get a good seal with the FF mask either.)

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Lanolin provides for an excellent seal. Some also use Ayr Nasal Gel. Also, how old are the pillows? If it's been a while, you may want to get a new set.

You might want to try using Ayr gel or Lansinoh nipple cream (believe it or not) in your nares to assist with the seal of your nasal pillows. Also might try using Rested Gal's tights solution (cutting a leg of women's tights to wrap around your mask and tie at the back of your head with a double twist), as this may hold your mask in place more effectively. Just be sure NOT to cover the vent holes of your mask!

The other question to ask... especially if they've leaked from the beginning is, are they the right size?

Get a better pillows design - ADAMS/Breeze with CONJO headgear.

Blunt, but IMJ that is the only combination for many people.
