Resscan Software Not Detecting Card Reader

The ACS reader that I have, which definitely does work, is an ACR38U-SPC-R.

And the answer is.....(at least for Mako 300 Smart Card Readers (aka Infineer) used with Resmed)

Go to your control panel < system < hardware < Device Manager. Scroll down to Smart card readers, and uninstall the smart card reader (right click and select uninstall). Now unplug the reader USB plug. Plug it back in, and you will see the "Found new hardware" prompt. When you see "device installed". It will work now.

For some reason, you need to do this once in a while. Its kind of a pain, but it works every time.

I deleted the device using the device manager, unplugged it and plugged it back in, allowed the system to detect the new device and install it. I still cannot get it to detect the card. I am inserting the card contact side up but cannot get it aligned just right. I tried making a guide but without the dimensions I don't seem to be able to get just the right alignment. The Resscan software does not see the card even though the card reader is active.

I made a card guide. I marked lines on the reader. I inserted the card contacts up. I uninstalled the device in Win XP. I reinserted the reader and allowed the system to detect the device and install the drivers. I still cannot get the Resmed 3.7 software to detect the card reader. Any other suggestions? I asked my DME to give me this S8 Elite II so I could read the data and view it but it is beginning to look impossible. Could there be something in the 3.7 software that only allows a Resmed card reader to be used?

No.

As I've mentioned previously, I have both a Resmed branded reader and a standard ACS branded ACR38U-SPC-R reader, and they both work equally well using the same set of standard ACS device drivers

I will have to find that information. I don't have it handy.

Thanks Bill. I installed the ACR card reader monitor. I can plug and unplug the reader with the card in it and the monitor software detects it and shows "ACS CCID USB Reader 0 Connected." But, in spite of that the Resscan software does not detect the reader.

I installed the ACS Quickview software that reports whether or not the reader and card are properly installed. It reports "Reader Name ACS CCIS USB Reader 0 ACS CCID USB Reader 0 is present in the system. Card is detected on reader."

So, my system sees the reader. The ACS monitor software sees that a card is installed but Resscan does not see it.

Puzzling.

The ACR38C uses different non support drivers. You need the U version.

The whole process is very flakey at best. I got mine to work once with the guide.

Ah. Great. You are right about the flakiness.

Sorry it took so long for me to get back. My suppliers is now sending me an ACR 38U reader which is different from a ACR 38C. I guess you will have to try and see if your supplier will exchange your reader for the correct one. Your ACS viewer software is seeing the card so it is probably lined up just not communicating with resscan 3.7 in the right language(so to speak).

I finally found time to have a look at the ACR38U-CCID reader technical specs.

This version of the ACR38 uses a different device driver version to the ACR 38U-SPC-R and ACR 38U-NPC readers. I don't have a ACR38U-CCID reader to experiment with but I did download the driver (version 1.1.6.4) to see if it would install in place of my 1.1.6.1 driver (the current driver versionb for an ACR 38U-SPC-R)...... but it would not recognise the ACR-38U-SPC-R as a compatible device for that driver and so it would not install.

This is at least prima facie evidence that there are real differences between the ACR38U-SPC-R device and the ACR38U-CCID device.

You might want to look at what driver version you have running in Windows, and if it is not the 1.1.6.4 driver (available from the ACS web site) then download that driver and see if that works for you. The ACR38U-CCID is supposed to support the PC/SC interface that ResScan needs, and if you are fortunate it might be just a matter of getting the correct device driver in place.

Well, no kidding. You have to disable the wireless lan network connection in the device manager for the ACR38U to work.

I have a Thinkpad running XP Pro SP3 that has no other problems. Super solid computer.

I work with computer hardware and write software for front ends, reports, websites and SQL databases for a living and would probably have never thought of that solution. This is windows 95/98/ME level crappy HW/SW conflict problem.

Who figured that out?
