5 hour energy

Post by Uncle_Bob » Wed Nov 04, 2009 12:55 pm

I've been resisting those little bottles of 5 hour energy that seem to be located at cash registers wherever i go.

Today a fellow cyclist at work has given me a bottle of 5 hour energy drink to try after i commented on not having enough energy for my 12 mile commute home, he is recommending i try one.

Don't get me wrong I'm doing good with my therapy, I'm not tired or yawning. I just had a strong head wind on the ride in and feel like i have no energy and heavy muscles etc.

I'm looking at the ingredients Niacan, B6, Folic Acid, B12 & Sodium at some pretty high dosages. As much caffine as a cup of coffee would be the only negative as far as i can tell.

Does anyone have any experience with this stuff? Will it mess with my sleep if i take it around 1-2pm?

2PM + 5 hours= 7 PM

What time do you plan on going to bed?

You may want to look closely at the ingredient phenylalanine.
That is not good stuff.
I would suggest take it easy going home or
call the wife for an actual pick-me-up.

Live to ride another day.

I just had a bottle about 15 mins ago so I'll see how I do.
The wife is on standby as she is most days in case it rains, i get a flat or something else bad happens.
I'll take it easy as i plan on riding thursday and friday so that i can get back to my 100 mile a week goal, also its great weather for riding here in Arizona now so i might even try and get in a 25 miles ride at the weekend to.

I plan on going to bed before 10pm as i'm averaging 8 hours 45 mins sleep right now.

cheers

I personally would find the niacin and folic acid a bit irritating as far as GERD goes, and so many of us have that, but if they don't bother you, then good luck. Niacin can help lower cholesterol and folic acid is also an antioxidant.

I've used the stuff, pre-CPAP....it didn't do much for me....though I wasn't too surprised. I could drink gallons of coffee all day, even have a couple cups just before going to bed....and it wouldn't stop me from dozing off during the day, and I'd be out like a light when I hit my pillow.

What I had hoped was that it being smaller, I wouldn't have to go as often during activities where I wanted to stay awake and bathrooms might be hard to find.

I still have a stash of 5-hour and 6-hour energy bottles around, though haven't had the situation to try them now. Did find out that having lots of coffee before bedtime, does make it hard to fall asleep now....

The Dreamer.

I guess it depends on what you read. These guys seem okay with it: http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/phen ... 000318.htm

Unless Bob is a baby with PKU, it looks okay to me.

Claimer: I don't use (nor sell) those things. Other than Propel, and that's just for the low Calorie count.

Bob, please give us an AAR (After Action Report) and let us know how you did. Wouldn't like to read a post from your wife saying you were smeared on the road the other night.

Cheers,
B.

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

Actually one bottle = 2 servings. So one bottle has the caffeine of 2 cups of coffee.

I used it a couple of time recently. It didn't cause anymore sleeplessness than the caffeine would have caused by itself.

After I downed the whole bottle of this stuff I started feeling jittery which I assume was from the caffeine. Other than that I did not notice any surge in energy or alertness really. I did manage to ride home OK, there was no headwind so i spent a good amount of time dropped down in the bars and managed an average speed of 17.6 mph.

The guy that gave me a bottle of this stuff did tell me that his son tried it and it did nothing for him.

I will continue to use my GU gel for riding when i need a boost http://www.guenergy.com/products

Along with Accelerade for good hydration http://www.accelerade.com/

These seem to help me with my weekly aim of cycling 75 to 125 miles a week so that i can keep my weight and cholesterol under control.

UB, that is about what I thought you would report.

Have you ever used Hammer Nutrition products?
I use HEED, which is their accelerade equivalent,
and Hammer Gel. Made from very healthy stuff.
I also use their product Endurolytes to increase my electrolytes.
These really help in the heat of the summer.

I mix the gel in my HEED bottles so I am taking in my carbs already liquified.
Very easy on the stomach when working hard.

No I have not used HEED but after checking out the ingredients I think i will give it a go when my Accelerade runs out.
I agree you need nutritional supplements in the summer heat. I found out the hard way when i crashed after about an hour cycling in 115 degree heat, a horrible experience. I was hesitant to take any carbs as I was doing the Atkins low carb diet, no i know better

I did a PB of 30 miles on Saturday which i was pleased with, especially since i was still felt refreshed on Sunday albeit with some sore muscles.

The Atkins diet and endurance cycling has to be
a hugh oxymoron.

What is a "PB"?

I did my easy 30miler on Sat. and hammered 51 on Sun.
I don't know if they were PB's.....but,
my legs are a bit sore today.....so I know it was a good weekend.
