Hello All

Post by accessdme » Tue Oct 20, 2009 3:04 pm

Hello folks! I've been visiting this forum for some time now and decided to register! I have been involved with sleep medicine for 15 years both in a military and civilian role. I currently work for a DME/Pharmacy in Tennessee and would be very glad to give advice or help anyone who is having problems with their equipment or provider.

Hi and welcome.
If you have been reading this forum for any length of time you will undoubtedly have seen that some DME people get blasted pretty bad.... So hope you have some good kevlar body armor. I don't like personal attacks so I don't participate in them but some people will blame you for their being screwed by their low life DME..

My DME (mask only since I bought my own machine) happens to be a pretty nice guy but freely admits that I likely know more about my stuff than he does. Jokes and says I need to come to work for him.

So good luck and I wish you the best on the firing line.

Thanks for your willingness to be of help. Its always good to get fresh perspectives on our treatment.

I would like to know more of your background, especially the experiences from the military.
We don't often hear of challenges from those in uniform and how they are handled. It sounds interesting.

Also, what equipment are you the most familiar with, (Resmed, Respironics, etc......)?

LOL, believe me Im pretty tough. I see roughly 30 -40 people a day. My approach is pretty basic. I let you know up front that I care about you as a whole and not just getting paid. My job is to work as closely with you as I can and I make myself available 24 hrs a day. I have my trunk full of mask, replacement parts and machines. I take what I do very seriously. I started working with two ENT physicians at RAF Lakenheath in the UK in 1993 who were experimenting on American troops who snored. These guys were more interested in surgical intervention but thats where it started.

Hi,

That is nice to hear. I have noticed a trend where so-called sleep clinics are popping on every corner just like gas stations. In fact, some are in converted gas station buildings. It is refreshing to hear that you have a service-oriented attitude. I was reading in another thread about a lady who found a DME home care professional who was a CPAP user, and he wanted to make sure that she got a good data-capable machine from day one. It is nice to know that not everyone in this business is out strictly for the money.

Where in Tennessee?

So far, my experience with the DME's at my sleep center has been pretty good... they were very patient with me and helped me along until I could find the mask that worked best for me.

Welcome Access, looking forward to your input. I'd be interested in what your professional status is, degrees, certifications, etc. As was mentioned, we've been "had" before.

Welcome!

I am one of the lucky ones on here in that my DME does everything he can (except being available 24 hours) to help me get the best therapy. He is pretty knowledgeable, although I think I may have surpassed him after being on here for a few months!

Luckily everything has been great, but I always wonder what I would do if my machine were to break on a weekend. I have severe apnea with low desat (73% during sleep study) and am not sure I'd survive that long!

Sleep well and live better!

Welcome aboard accessdme!
Unlike some of the folks here, I have been very fortunate in that I have a GREAT DME. They have always been very obliging and professional. They even GAVE me a Mirage Liberty so that I could try it and see if it worked for me.
