This ever happen to you?

Post by janetlee » Mon Oct 19, 2009 11:25 am

I woke up last night and my nasal mask was completely off my head, laying on the floor with hose still connected. I dunno if I pulled it off in my sleep or it worked itself off as I was laying on my tummy with my head turned to the side.
Another thing...I woke up more times to go potty last night than usual. It was very aggravating! Before I got on cpap, I wasn't like most folks I've read about because I usually only woke up once or twice a night to go to bathroom. Go figure!

Oh yes--this happened to me alot when I first started out. Then as I got more accustomed to sleeping with this THING on my face, it slowed down. I also tried to make sure I was more aware of removing it and not allowing it to happen. Give it some time.

On the other hand, I'm about 6 months into this, and on Saturday night it happened again. I actually do remember taking it off and am not sure why I allowed it. It has been leaking a bit and that's annoying. Anyhow, it prompted me to pull out the new mask I just got and switch it up.

Good luck!

its common for new users to remove the mask when mostlly asleep, I did this

simply tape mask to face so the pain will remind you to leave it on

I've never awakened to my mask off, but did wake up to being tied up by the hose-it was wrapped around my neck....lol

Most of us have removed the mask in the middle of the night and not remembered it at one time or another. Unless you make a habit of it then don't worry about it. Should you find that you are doing it pretty regularly then you might consider a little taping to the face or put something on your hands (socks or mittens) to make mask removal difficult.

I think sometimes a little sneaky part of your subconscious brain just wants to know what will happen with the mask off, so it plays that little trick on you. It usually learns that kind of practical joke is not funny, and then it moves on to the old mainstays--like turning off your alarm before an important day at work or making you forget where you put your glasses or your car keys, and other stuff like that.

I am a newbie here so please forgive me if this is a dumb question - but I find this topic confusing.

When my mask is accidentally knocked off or if I removed it to go to the john in the middle of the nights, it makes a hell out of venting noise that could weak up any sleepyheads. How come you all don't hear it? Is there something wrong with my equipment? I am using the new PR System One with the Comfortgel nasal mask.

Some have "auto-off" engaged. But others of us have apparently turned our machines off in the middle of the night without knowing we did it. Still others wake up, consciously turn off the machine, start to get out of bed to go to the bathroom or get a drink of water, and fall asleep before we have completed the process. Others come back to bed and fall asleep before we get strapped back up for the rest of the night's journey. (Or should that be "the journey of the night's rest"? )

Until sleeping gets normalized and our brain gets used to what is happening, weird things can happen for some of us. At least they did for me at first.

Good question. Glad you asked. Hope that helps.
