RESMED VPAP Auto 25 questions

Post by jschumann » Thu Oct 15, 2009 6:16 pm

Been on BiPAP for years, just got the new machine.

Two questions:

1. No data shows up in the results/efficacy screens (after 1 night use). Is there a setting that turns on storage of results data or something else to look at?

2. I really like the Smartstart feature but it is disabled for full face masks. Exactly what does the machine do different for each of the mask settings (Can I use a setting that enables smartstart without affecting the outupt of the machine.

Thanks,
John

There is a setting to enable that data being available for the user to see. However, if you were looking for your results after 12 noon, that may be why nothing showed. You have to look for it before 12 noon, as the efficacy data resets at noon -- to be ready to collect the next sleep session's data.

The Smartstart feature is supposed to be disabled when you select the Full Face mask setting. The safety valve (the flap that stays open when machine is not running) is why Smartstart isn't supposed to be used with a FF mask.

Please check your Private Messages, John. I just now sent you one.

Thanks for the info Rested Gal

So I can't view results for a day after 12:00? Looks like I need to wait until a week of data is collected and look on the week screen? I typically don't have time to look at data before noon (got to get to work).

Where does it discuss this safety valve and could I use a different setting? Doesn't make sense about it being open when machine is off, why would it matter? My older RESMED unit did work smartstart with full face (but didn't have mask setting choices. So what would be the problem if I use it with a different mask setting?

Thanks,
John

At first I didn't realize I wasn't supposed to use a FFM with SmartStart. I was using non-ResMed masks, so I set the mask type to "Standard." SmartStart worked just fine with the FlexiFit 432. I only used it a few nights, but I had no problem.

I'm guessing, but I suspect that "Mir Full" is the only setting for which SmartStart is disabled. I'd compare the flow rates for your mask to those of various ResMed mask settings and choose one that's closest. For the FlexiFit 432 and 406/407, the "Standard" setting is the closest.

Good idea. If you do that, John, you might (or might not) find that you need to put your finger over the open valve when you take the initial breath to make "SmartStart" turn on the blower.

The purpose of that valve on Full Face masks is to provide a larger opening to get fresh air through...larger than just the exhaust vent holes... in the event power goes out. If that happened while wearing a nasal (not Full Face) mask, you could start mouth-breathing in your sleep to get more fresh air. With a FF mask on, however, mouth breathing would occur inside the mask.

OK, that makes sense. I have tried other settings and Smartstart worked. Whic brings me back to my original question, is the sir flow (settings/delivery etc), still going to be OK?

Understand the valve thing now.

Thanks,
John

ResMed machines figure in the normal exhaust vent rate of a mask when calculating "leak." Ideal leak rate with a ResMed machine is zero. As far as I know, that's the reason you're asked to select a mask setting -- to let the machine know what mask's vent rate to use for leak report purposes.

I don't think the mask you choose affects the operation of the machine, other than that selecting the FF mask setting disables SmartStart.
