Keep Mask Used At Titration Study?
Greetings,
I'm hoping that someone can answer this newbie question....
I've had my initial overnight study and have been diagnosed with mild obstructive sleep apnea. I'm going in for the CPAP titration study tonight. Thanks to all you wonderful people here and the reviews and mask-fitting guidelines at cpap.com, I have narrowed down mask choices that may work best for my facial characteristics.
My question is, is it common practice to allow the patient to keep the mask used at the titration study? If it can't be re-used there then I'd sure like to! Is it likely that I'll be able to try out my first choice (assuming it actually does fit properly) -- Mirage Activa Nasal CPAP Mask?
I'm just trying to prepare for tonight's study. I'm not sure what to expect. Thanks for any guidance you can share!

While masks are disinfected and re-used where I had my sleep study, I have read a post here where the mask was given to the person. Some posted they got b'fast or at least coffee the next morning; I got zip...of course I was on cloud 9 from the first restful sleep I'd had in nearly a decade so coffee-food wasn't on my scope at the time! Sleep well tonight!

The mask used on me at my titration was a cheapo, scaled-down, one-time-use mask that the tech let me keep. Since it was a full face, and I was going to use a nasal mask, I kept the cheapo as my backup mask for a while in case I needed it during a cold or something. Later, I got a REAL full-face mask to use as backup, so I gave away the one-time-use mask to a friend to be his backup mask for just in case.

Thanks, Muse-Inc. I have also read the posts regarding the complimentary mask and breakfast. I wasn't offered breakfast or coffee either!Muse-Inc wrote:While masks are disinfected and re-used where I had my sleep study, I have read a post here where the mask was given to the person. I would love to hear more from others about their experiences. Perhaps the sleep labs would be more inclined to provide a test mask to someone without insurance. It would be a nice gesture in those cases. If they are able to re-use them, then it's not likely I suppose.

Thanks for responding, jnk. My insurance has preauthorized a nasal mask, so I'm guessing they will use that style for testing, but I'd love to have even a cheapo full-face mask to use for those times when I'm congested due to allergies, cold or flu!jnk wrote:The mask used on me at my titration was a cheapo, scaled-down, one-time-use mask that the tech let me keep. I was allowed to keep my Resmed Quattro, It was used I'm guessing once or maybe just fitted and then sterilized. I've been using it ever since. I was also given a new Quattro by the DME which I'm holding as a spare. Got a full breakfast & morning paper too

Wow, you certainly lucked out all the way around! I'm going to ask nicely and see what they say.Rustyolddude wrote:I was allowed to keep my Resmed Quattro, It was used I'm guessing once or maybe just fitted and then sterilized. My husband and I went to the same place and we each got to keep our masks. That's actually how I found this board, trying to figure out why the masks were different. His was just some disposable kind of full face mask, but my wasn't.

Thanks to all for sharing your experiences. It looks like there's no set way this is handled at each sleep center. I'm hoping for a dreamy night's sleep at my first titration study tonight!

Yes, and someone got a newspaper too!Catnapper wrote:What? People got coffeee? breakfast? a mask? Wow, I went to the wrong place! All I got was directions to the exit!
Don't feel bad, I didn't come home with a mask and didn't get breakfast, coffee or a newspaper either. I did leave with a slight headache and a drippy nose though. And I had some interesting "hallucinations" before finally falling asleep.
