Results of my sleep study

Post by KatieW » Tue Oct 13, 2009 10:08 pm

I met with my sleep doc today, and got the results of my Sleep Study. I have tried to pick out the pertinent figures. If you're interested, have a look. Any comments are welcome.

Diagnostic Analysis (3.9 hours in bed)
- Sleep Efficiency 53.5%
- Total REM time 0.0 minutes
- Apneas, Obstructive: 21
- Apneas, Mixed: 2
- Apneas, Central: 1
- Apneas Index 11.6
- Hypopneas Index: 44
- AHI Index: 55.6 (severe obstructive sleep apnea)
- RERA Index 23.2
- Minimum O2 Sat. 80%
- Mean O2 Sat. 92%

Treatment Analysis (3.3 hours on cpap). Titrated at: 7 cmH2O)
- Sleep Efficiency 82%
- Total REM time 18.5 minutes
- Apneas, Total 0
- Apneas Index 0
- Hypopneas Index .6
- AHI Index: .6 (normal)
- RERA Index 3.1
- Minimum O2 Sat. 88%
- Mean O2 Sat. 94%

The sleep doc didn't spend alot of time explaining it, but thanks to reading at this forum, I was able to figure out most of it. Summary: I was one sick puppy....and I'm going to get a whole lot better!

I just ordered my cpap and mask, via express delivery from cpap.com. They matched the prices at directhomemedical.com, without hesitation.

The learning curve has been steep, but rewarding. Thank you for this forum!

Katie,

Here is hoping that you go from being a "sick puppy" to be a "happy kitten". What prompted you to get a sleep study? I know I let things go way too long, and I wish I had known about this stuff 10 years ago. I was groggy through the entire Bush administration, and when I came to after getting started on treatment, I found out that Mr. Obama had been elected. It is amazing what you hear about and learn when you are not sleeping all day long.

Likely they found you have an obstructive problem, so surgery would be a good option for you. CPAP is usually used for people who actually stop breathing (known as apnea). They usually remove tonsils and addenoids as well as a small portion of the soft palate. This will remove the obstruction causing snoring and unrestful sleep. It is effective.Pet-friendly hotels

John, glad you're awake now!

To answer your question, my husband has told me I snore. But I was prompted to get a sleep study after 2 women friends told me they had just gotten cpap's. I didn't even know women got sleep apnea. It started me thinking about my frequent feeling of not getting a good night's sleep and being tired during the day. So I asked my doc about sleep apnea. After a take home oximetry test, he scheduled me to see a pulmonologist and sleep clinic.

Hi Katie,

I noticed from your study that you were diagnosed with sever sleep apnea and yet your Mean O2 Sat. is still 92%. With my understanding i would expect that to be less, but i am no expert.
Good luck with your therapy.

There are definitely some good things about that study. It can be awfully difficult to get to sleep during a sleep study using CPAP for the first time. But KatieW slept 82 percent of the time and got some REM sleep. She obtained real good results with a rather low 7 cmH2O. I don't want to jinx her, but that suggests that she tolerates CPAP well and will make the adjustment easily. At 7 managing leaks should be a breeze, so to speak.

Interesting observation Bob. Looking at my Omimetry report, % of time at 90-100% = 86.8%. % of time at 80-89% is 9.7%. Then, looking at the graph, the SaO2 is all over the place, down to 80, up to 95-100%--which is when I was awake, and I was awake quite a bit of the time, since my sleep efficiency was 53.5%. Don't know if that explains it or not????

Should be a breeze ....Thanks, I'm hoping so. Equipment is being delivered tomorrow, and I'm out of town right now, but will be back on Sat. Can hardly wait.
