eye ache

Post by andrec » Sat Oct 03, 2009 5:42 am

Hi,
This is my first post. I just started using a Repironics Pro M series and Respironics mask, pressure at 8 cm H2O, two weeks ago. I'm gradually getting used the the system. I'm more refreshed in the morning and waking up less at night, although I never thought my sleep was too bad to begin with. The biggest benefit is for my wife. She reports that my extremely loud snoring has completely stopped and I'm no longer sleeping in the guest room!. Her complaints about my snoring are what got me to go for a sleep study in the first place where I was diagnosed with mixed moderate apnea.

The only side effect I seem to be having is an eye ache. It sort of feels like my eyes are being pressurized from behind and they ache on and off during the day. It was worse the first few days of using the machine. Now it's mild, but still hasn't gone away. Has anyone had this problem? I'd like to get some feedback from other users before checking in with the sleep clinic.
Thanks!

I can't comment on what's causing your problems, and you've only been on the system for a short time, so please don't assume anything dire is going on yet, but on the very off-chance Cpap has possibly brought something prior to light, I suggest you see your ophthalomologist. One thing we are aware of is that OSA can be associated with glaucoma (not a lot more though than in people without it), so we make a point of being checked out routinely. In your case it's more likely that your system in general may be adjusting to Cpap, but it's probably worth it to get checked out.

Thanks for your input. I did have a thorough eye exam last month and was screened for glaucoma, but now I know to mention it to the ophthalomologist.

I am an Ophthalmologist. The common form of Glaucoma does not hurt. The "pressure feeling" is likely due to dryness that is very common with CPAP machines. A safe thing to try is an ointment (OTC) like Refresh-PM-just a small bit in both eyes to keep them lubricated throughout the night. Then try tears (like Systane) throughout the day as needed-this will be rarely. It never hurts to see one of us, but this may help.

Hi,

I have a similar issue.
From time to time I have the feeling that air came out of my eye, while I under the mask.
When I rub my eyes, it feels like there is air or water behind.
It makes a strange noise.

Any explanation for that?

The tears follow the channels into your nose-that is why your nose drips when you cry. Pressure from within the nose can push air up into the tear ducts. I am actually surprised it does not happen more often.

Just try to tell that to an RT at you local DME! You should have heard the flak I got from them about that.
Yes more of us have that but we have given up trying to get anyone to help us with it. Because we are told we are incompetent idiots and we are just imagining this.
