Sinus surgery scheduled

Post by cflame1 » Fri Oct 02, 2009 2:49 pm

Dec 17.

Septoplasty, Bilateral Turbinoplasty, Endoscopic Ethinoid Maxillary Sinus

Basically, straighten a deviated septum, shrink my turbinates and enlarge the drainage capabilities. Doc said that I should be able to go back to work on the Monday (I work on a computer all day) after the surgery on Thursday. I'm spending 23 hours at the hospital under observation as there is nobody here to check on me (I live alone). He said that he's done thousands of these, and that I'm not his first sleep apnea patient getting sinus surgery.

Wish me luck! Could be a long week that week.

Any advice is appreciated for the recovery.

Good Luck.

I had a rough go so I won't recommend you to my posts about sinus surgery...

I was the exception to the norm and I'm sure you will be fine.

Expect more recovery time than you are being told, that much I am certain of.

Same here, I had Double Septoplasty & Double Turbinate Reduction Nov. 2007 and I think the pressure and weight from my mask and hose has just ruined everything I had done!!!
Just try to remember to keep the pressure & weight of the hose off your nose as much as possible after the surgery for the first 6 months! Keep it routed above from above if at all possible.
I don't know if I would direct you to my post either!!!
You should look up "Roosters"surgery posts", he had a wonderful experience and did fantastic, lucky dog...
Just have alot of soup, crackers, instant mashed potatoes, gravy, alot of soft foods & yogurts and try to pre-cook it so all it needs is warming up! Also, I would pick up a box of guaze & paper tape just in case it's needed. I had a baby dropper that I used to drink fluids as they had over-packed my nose. You might want to buy some liquid tylenol instead of trying to swallow a pill. I would of been 100% fine if it wasn't for that over-packing (it was so far down my throat) I had to go in 2 days post-op & he cut some of it out of the back of my throat, geez!
You will be fine & do great though, I want to add that the packing they leave in your nose for a week has cocaine in it... , yes cocaine and i'm not kidding! I read that off my itemized statement I got from the hospital.......
Goodluck & I wish you the very Best, Aw, I just know you are going to do great! Post back after you get home

The doc says that all he uses are plastic splints that come out after a couple of days.

Oh YES!! That's what I wanted to hear... My Grandson had Septoplasty & that's what they used on him, I don't have a clue as to why my ENT packed my nose rather than just using splints, OH, I am so happy for you, that's awesome, so you will be OK!!! At least you will be able to eat & breathe! The pain isn't that bad, it was the packing I had the problem with and had it in for 5-7 days, I can't & don't want to think about it!
I breathe so much better now, your going to love it after the first week!

Mine was almost 20 years ago now and I was packed. I've never seen the splints but I have to believe just doing away with the packing will make it WAY more tolerable! Still, I too was told I could go back to work in a couple of days. Hah - not even close. I recommend going back if you can, but having a plan B all warmed up in case you need more time.

It's not the most pleasant recovery, but I predict you won't regret it for a minute!
