Weight gain/ loss?

Post by cindin » Tue Sep 22, 2009 3:55 pm

Hi, I am new to this site and new to cpap [about 2 weeks on the machine] and am doing well. I have read many posts about people who have gained a lot of weight since starting cpap. And some have claimed to loose some weight. I just don't understand how this relates to being on cpap. Help me out here people. Thanks

Maybe some people have more energy so they are more active and need to eat less, because they are not constantly trying to get energy to keep them awake. Then others feel better and start eating MORE because they feel hungrier? Not sure about that one.

I've lost weight slowly but steadily since starting CPAP; about ten pounds so far in six months. Not a lot, but it's staying off!

Metabolism changes when levels of nutrients, water, blood oxygenation, and activity levels change as they do following initiation of CPAP therapy. As restful sleep begins, our blood chemistry begins to normalize...this changes everything...again. Hard to predict what will occur regarding weight given the magitude of metabolic changes from pre-CPAP therapy. I lost next to nothing first yr, now beginning my 3rd year, I've lost 53#s total (lots more to lose) and that includes being in a stall since February this year.

I am 2 years down with my cpap therapy and the first year I actually lost weight but in this last year I have packed on at least 15 pounds and it's not because of the therapy, it's because I started eating ALOT of Ice Cream, Pop Corn, & out food, I need to stop, I've noticed that in my daily reports, i'm having more snores and apneas since i've put on the extra weight...

Thanks! Temptation is always there, but honestly, the 125 mgms of grape seed extract I've been taking for several months really has cut my appetite to stick with my plan even tho I've been in a long stall. The apnea backslid that began in Feb (loose lips phenomena ), fall & hospitalization for IV antibotics, and then the layoff in March really ganged up to create the stall far as I'm concerned. Now with weeks wearing the Hybrid, elimination of the every 90-120 mins wakeups that started last July, and upcoming change to eating a la The 6 Week Cure for the Middle Aged Middle will help jump start the wt loss...I hope

I have been on CPAP since jun 2009 and I have noticed a 10 lb weight gain since then. I have more energy and have been excercising. So I hope it is just muscle build up and will lose some lbs. I feel like my diet has been better. Thinking of joining weight watchers.

Since 1 month ago I lost 2.2lbs and my diet has been better. Before I got my CPAP & PSG's I lost about 5lbs on Weight Watchers with the Monthly Pass. I have been up by a couple of ounces now and again during weigh in but I have felt that's natural and will occur every now and again. CMR: If you join Weight Watcher's remember one thing: At different times of the day and different days the group leader will be different and the group as a whole may be different, so it may take a couple of tries to find a fit for your personality(like a CPAP mask).

I've gained some weight since starting a couple of months ago, but I think it is totally unrelated to xpap. I would say it's more because our diet has been thrown into crazy mode since my wife is pregnant. I can no longer cook in the house because the smells will make her want to toss her cookies.

It's also been rainy here lately so no bike riding. I imagine CarbonMan is out there somewhere in this weather anyways, though! Haha!

FWIW, my doctor told me CPAP in and of itself has no effect on weight gain or loss. If the therapy results in higher energy levels which in turn result in a higher level of activity, that is a peripheral issue. I myself have gained 5-10 lbs since starting CPAP 9 months ago but he said it isn't related. No change in diet or exercise level but the change may be just be to a decreased metabolic rate with age.

It is a scientifically documented fact that while you sleep your digestive system is better able to convert the food in your stomach to "energy" ie stored fat. That is why every diet has to rule of no eating after 7pm. Since with a cpap you are actually sleeping instead of constantly waking it makes total sense that cpap treatment will cause weight gain if nothing else changes, after all cpap treatment causes all your organs to work better - that is the aim of cpap treatment.

Most physicians have at most one course in nutrition of any sort so why take their word for it?

Exactly Jason: OSA leads to weight gain by having your body crave more high sugar/quick energy foods and because you are tired you eat more fast food and you move less. If CPAP therapy does lead to more energy for a person and they can learn to change their diet by getting out of the habit they had for years of eating these quick energy foods through either a support group like Weight Watchers/TOPS or by finding a nutritionist to help them eat better. And with higher energy levels are a result of therapy then maybe walking more(even on a treadmill or an apartment hallway or mallwalking) can be a good start. I also would make a suggestion that if there has been a tragedy or traumatic event in your life(this can lead to comfort eating) to see a qualified therapist and/or friend as support(even at the meetings at the above places can be a good place for support). These forums are also a good place because whoever you are someone here is probably in the exact same boat as you and can help you row to shore.
Before starting any exercise program please consult with a physician about what you can do1500 calories is a minimum for intake and should never go below 1000
