What size Swift LT pillow?

Post by momof2inmn » Wed Sep 16, 2009 6:16 pm

When I first got my Swift LT my DME thought that I would need to use the XS size pillow. I do have small nares and it seemed to work well for a couple of days. Then it seemed to whistle when I either inhaled or exhaled (can't remember which). I switched to the S size and it did the same thing. Then I switched to the M size and no more whistle! The M seems a little too big for me though and lately my nose seems puffed up and spread out in the morning. I chalked it up to the air pressure going in my nose, but maybe it's due to using too large of a pillow.

How did you determine which size was best for you and if you had a whistle, how did you fix it?

Thanks!

I can use the extra small or the small but the XS seems to fit the best. I have had a few whistles but they seemed to be from the seal. I just would pull out the pillows away from my nose a bit, let them inflate and then reposition them again. No more whistle. If the head gear was a bit too tight it seemed to make it worse. To be honest, I can count on one hand the number of "whistle" nights that I had any issues with.

Try using AYR nasal gel on your nostrils before masking up, I have used the AYR for along time and would not think of not using it really helps with the seal, that and the correct size mask, right adjustment of your mask , and definitely keep notes on which adjustment works best and you should be sleeping better, on the down side ever time I thought I had this cpap treatment controlled a bad night would happen and then back to the drawing board, considering the alternative I will stick with the patience of solving issues.I wish you good sleep, stay in touch.

When I first got my LT, like you , I had the whistles.. very annoying to say the least! And also, like you, I kept changing sizes until I found one that was comfortable and no whistles and no leaks. Which was a Medium. And like Hurricane suggested, use the Ayr gel. I use it religiously every night. Not only does it help the seal, but it also keeps your nasal passages from drying out from the direct air. Also, the holes in the smaller ones are smaller as well and I could not breathe with them. Medium-perfect. And as far as the puffing of the nose, all pillows tend to do that as the pressure rises. IMO.. I would continue to use the Medium if I were you, sounds like it fits you well.

I use the extra small. I have only been using cpap for two months, but so far, I have been judging the fit by how much it leaks. Every time I use the small it leaks so bad that the air and noise wake me up. I use the Canadian version of the nasal gel too, as advised on this forum. It helps a lot.

It seemed to work a couple days...

Just wash it in Dawn detergent, and the fit and seal will return. moisture and oils just cause leaks.

I would look at your AHI's and see which pillow gives you the best numbers. I use the medium and I stay under 5. I have tried the small, but it leaked. I guess it's just a matter of choice.

When I first got the Swift I put the small (loose) to my nose and thought - no way, too small. I tried the medium for a few nights with mixed AHI and leak results. My nose was also a little sore. I then hooked up the small and allowed the machine to inflate them. No more sore nose and leaks/AHI have been good for weeks.

You may just need to try each one out for a couple of nights.
