initial DME visit: documentation of policies?

Post by sifr » Tue Sep 15, 2009 4:28 pm

So, when you first visited your DME, were you given documentation explaining:

* the terms and conditions of your relationship with the DME, including your and the DME's rights and responsibilities,
* a timetable for consumables replacement,
* an explanation of servicing procedure,
* information regarding when and how much you will be billed,
* information regarding how you go about getting new consumables?

I wasn't given ANY of that, and I'm currently dealing with a few higher-ups in the DME's corporate chain trying to get all this clarified. I'm beginning to get the impression that I'm annoying them by having the temerity to insist upon some clarity in my contract with them, but I don't think it's at all unreasonable to expect such information when one enters into a contractual relationship with a company. Particularly not when there's a financial responsibility on the part of the customer.

Getting the information in writing is like pulling teeth, and about as pleasant.

No, to all of your points. And I'm still trying to get the parameters of the relationship in writing months later -- 'cause the DME, the insurance, and the HR department who sets the parameters for the insurance are all strongly reluctant to put anything in writing.

Oddly enough I got 3 out of 5, as listed below.
* a timetable for consumables replacement,
* information regarding when and how much you will be billed,
* information regarding how you go about getting new consumables?

So far my DME has been pretty good, I got a good machine without even asking, and I was ready to insist.
The only thing they did was to keep the small & large pillows from the Swift LT, but since I had no real use for them I did not push it.

Next month I'm due for a new mask and want to get either a Hybrid or a Liberty so we'll see how that works out. I'm expecting him to argue with me because of my beard & mustache, but from reading on here I believe I can make it work

Most of those look like something you would confirm with your insurance provider (in addition to the DME).

Nope. DME bills me. DME supplies gear to me. DME is the one I'm doing business with. I'm the DME's customer. They need to tell me these things.

And, as if my asserting it wasn't enough, that's also what the insurance company says. If I ask them anything, they tell me to ask the DME.

Problem is that the DME doesn't want to be forthcoming.

I was given a form to sign saying I agreed to all the contract terms stated in the attachment - except of course there was no attachment. The RT told me he was never given an attachment for people to read. I didn't sign.
