My machine is noisy?

Post by sbgrace » Mon Sep 14, 2009 10:16 pm

I can hear myself breath in and out very loudly when I use my machine--REMstar Auto, M series with A-Flex. It has made getting used to my machine difficult. My husband also dislikes the noise and feels it disrupts his sleep. So I thought this was part of the whole thing.

My mother recently was dx'd with moderate apnea and received the same machine. She can't hear herself breath like I do but she has a full face mask while I have a nasal which I assumed was the difference. Still, I brought my machine over to try with her (she tried my machine with her own mask). My machine makes her breathing loud/noticeable! We switched back to hers again..no noise.

What's going on with my machine?

What are your and your mom's A-Flex or C-Flex settings? Turning either of the flexes (flexi? flicies?) on can make a machine nosier.

If you're using a Swift mask, that's the noise maker, not the machine necessarily, so I'd look into changing that at least.

I found the Flex settings more troublesome and no help. You might want to try it with them turned off. What is your pressure?

Putting the machine on a wooden chair at a level about 18 inches below the top of the mattress made a huge improvement in the noise level for me.

I found opening a lower drawer on night stand and placing machine in it (don't close drawer!) really helps with noise. Be sure plenty of air can get around back of machine.

I HAD the exact same machine - my respitory company sent it back to the company for an overhaul and it came back quieter. Would have been cheaper for the insurance company to just buy me a new one. Even with that, my sleep didn't improve. I changed my respitory supplier and love the company I am with. I was told that this machine is outdated and you might go to your respitory company and look into a new machine. I remember hearing myself breath and it sounded like the machine was having a wheezing attack. I would also hold my breath and the machine continued to breathe for me - absolutely nuts!!

I now have a ResMed Autoset II APAP machine and absolutely LOVE it. Believe me, you will be able to tell a world of difference. You have the option of changing the pressure settings. I went from somewhat troubled sleep to normal sleep. It is worth looking into new technology especially if your machine is over 5 years old. Things are much better now - believe me
