Why Aren't I Sweating Anymore?

Post by Maryland_Mike » Tue Sep 08, 2009 6:13 am

I used to have to change my shirt during the night because it was wet with sweat. Since going on CPAP I haven't had that problem at all. This is an added benefit I wasn't expecting. (I'm not getting up in the middle of the night for a bathroom trip, either, but I had read about that benefit.)

Why would CPAP cause me to sweat less?

Nite sweats is another symptom of OSA. If your OSA is treated by the cpap there will be no more 'lo O2' - no more aerobic heart racing trying to supply O2 to your dying brain and organ cells, thus no need to sweat.

Do you miss it? Is that the problem?

I noticed that the bed sheet on my side of the bed is no longer creased like crazy since starting xpap.

My understanding is that repeated obstructions can trigger the fight-or-flight response. Those panic hormones can trigger night sweats and do a number on the body. It is amazing how much better life can get once one is able to sleep and breathe at the same time.

Just before I got my machine, not only were my blankets and sheets going every which way, but I'd sometimes wake up with my body on top of my pillow.

Now sometimes it's as if I didn't move at all during a night's sleep, a real difference.

When I get up, after looking at the LCD on my machine, I look at my sheets and just like you mentioned, sometimes they don't even look like I was laying there! If I see that, it usually corresponds to a refreshed feeling. There have been a few nights since starting therapy that didn't go so well and my sheets were creased and crumpled and I didn't feel as great that day.

Based on these posts, should we propose some new sleep-quality-measurement indexes, the OPI (Overnight Perspiration Index) and the BDI (Bedclothes Disarray Index)?

That's how they did it in the "Olden Dayes Before Thee Computer"!
My guess is that treating sleep disorders back then became a lost art that is probably recorded in some illuminated manuscript in an abbey in Perugia.
