Hi there!!

You have a fabulous sense of humour my dear lady!! I love that you can laugh about all of this. It so helps with the process.

Couple of questions for you. Re: removing your mask at night. Do you have longer hair or enough to pull back into a small pony at night. I find when I sleep with my hair out of a pony the mask slips off at night easily. If I have it in a ponytail I slip one of the straps under the pony and never have a problem. If I do need to sleep without hair pulled back I use my daughters little hair clips (barretts) to keep it in place.

The lanolin referred to in an early post I use is called Lansinoh (and yes it's nipple cream) you can usually find it with the diaper rash stuff at the drug store. I put a thin layer on my nose. Double benefit, nose is nice and soft.
These beautiful kids in my avi are my motivation for getting healthy and staying compliant. Need to be around a long time. See my new blog at http://creativekidscakeslife.blogspot.com/ Baking Blog http://feedingtheravenoushorde.blogspot.com

Better to laugh than cry.
. Do you have
longer hair or enough to pull back into a small pony at night.
I did try that. I can get it into a short ponytail but it falls out in the night. My hair in the morning reflects the restlessness of my sleep. If my daughter says "nice hair mom!" it means the back of my hair resembles a rat's nest. My hair is fine so it is slippery. I called my friend who is a stylist and requested that she do a bit of chemical damage to my hair to make it less slippery, so the mask would have something to grab onto. She is a good friend and she damaged my hair for me. I have found that it works best if i pull my hair under the strap. Although it sounds funny I am not being facetious, all of the above is serious.

thanks but I have to pass on the nipple cream. I have nothing against nipple cream but Lanolin is a sheep/wool product and I am allergic to wool. My nose woudn't be so soft if I tried it. I have been using the nasal gel (my friend refers to it as "fake snot"). So far the FS seems to help.

thanks for the encouragement and advice.

Hi Everyone,

My first post and one of many...Where do you get a card reader and the software, and is it expensive? Also, I notice everyone seems to know how to read the data, whereas I have no clue. Did your DMEs (?) teach you and if they did, is it part of the process for them to teach you?

I've been using my APAP since January and am still having a hard time with leaks. I've tried about 5 masks and like the Quattro the best so far, but can't seem to get it from leaking. It's so frustrating! I wear it every night to feel better and still don't feel great! I actually had ONE night that was successful, since the next day I felt great. I want that feeling again!

Thanks for any help that I can get.

Diane

Diane,
If you'd fill out your profile (text please) so that people knew what kind of machine and mask you had it would help you to get better answers.

I am sure I will have many more questions in the future, but for now:

1. I would appreciate suggestions for making the mask feel more comfortable?

2. I am still having a fair number of events, but the numbers seem to be lower on nights that I lay awake for hours. Does anyone know how accurate the efficacy results are? If I use the machine for 5 hours but am only asleep for 2, does that skew the results or is the machine programmed to recognize that I am not asleep?
3. This feels like a stupid question, but I don't care, I just want to finally start feeling better...I read somewhere that people use nasal gel to help achieve better seal. Because of my rhinitis, I have been using nasal gel for a long time--inside my nose. It sounded like some people use it on the outside?

Thanks in advance,
R
My five years of cpap provide the following thoughts.
1. I have used nasal pillows and found that for me, the medium works best, small isn't open enough to pass enough air, and large leaks too much (Swift). I now use a Liberty which has pillows and a mouth cushion; both medium and large work with it. I am guessing that nasal pillows may not be the right kind of mask for you. If you can afford something else, it might be worth a try.
Do you have a humidifier? You will probably get a lot of dryness with the nasal pillows. Your sinuses tend to overcompensate and you get a lot of stuffiness and drainage without a humidifier. Replace your filters often and use a humidifier to help with the rhinitis.
2. My ResMed machine doesn't know if I am using it or not. My GoodKnight knows how many hours I have it on and how many hours I am "cheating" by having it off. If your model has the software, this info should be available.
3. My clinician had me use the nasal gel inside the nostrils in place of a humidifier. It helped with the dryness, but wasn't as good as the real thing: a humidifier at the proper setting. I doubt that it would help with a better seal. In fact, i think it would be the opposite. Oily skin and oil build up at the point of contact of the cushions and masks prevent a good seal and make for more leaks.

I hope this helps.
