Pressure differences confusing--Answers anyone

Post by rudyrx » Wed Aug 26, 2009 5:30 pm

Hi Gang,
It has been a long time since I have posted, but I need your help. I have had an Intellipap autopap since last summer and have like the machine greatly. When I read that the new Smart Code ability was now built in, I bought the new one last week. I have been unable to use the software from various manufactures since I am on an Apple computer system (3 of them in my house) and it seems that all the manufactures make all of this software for recording your control for PC's only not realizing that there are us Apple with sleep apnea also. So I was delighted to learn thatI can download my code from the previous night to CPAP.com and get a report. (THANK YOU CPAP.COM FOR MAKING THIS AVAILABLE ON YOUR WEBSITE).
Here is where my question lies. After just 2 nights on the new Intellipap auto, I have received two reports. Night one I woke up felling very well and ready to take on the world. That report read my pressure readings at 95% at 12.5 cm2. This morning after 7 hours on the hose, I woke up in that apnea fog and it took me half a day to get going- very discouraging. I submitted today's report and for 95% pressure reading of 5 ?? and a reading of 4 cm2 at 90th percentile. My sleep studies all have come out in the 9-10 range.
Does anyone know why there would be this big difference in the 2 nights and the fact that a 4-5 pressure is no doubt the reason I woke up with the fog?? I know this is only two days of data and a very small sample, but it appears to me that there should not be this huge difference in the pressure readings of the two nights. Any and all thoughts would be helpful on this sinceI am totally blown away by these readings. BTW my machine is set a 4cm2 bottom range and 13.5 for top end. Thanks in advance for any possible explanation of these two night readings.

Have you checked the settings to be sure that they are correct?

(And by the way, the pressure units are centimeters of water (cm H20). It's the pressure that a column of water that high would create.

Hi Rudy.

How come so long, no post?

Anyway.......I'd do something about that bottom pressure setting. It's going to take too long for the pressure to get to where it needs to be.......and do harm to your body in the meantime.
I'd recommend setting it to about 12 cm. and see what that looks like.

Den,
Thanks for the input. This is my original thinking also that for some reason my machine did not come off the bottom pressure reading. I'll give it a try tonight and let you know.

HI GANG ,
THANKS FOR THE 2 OF YOU THAT GAVE ME FEEDBACK. I upped my lower pressure from 4 to 6 last night and today's printout gave me pressures back up in my usual range. I think that perhaps the itellipap auto never came off these lower settings all night for some reason, so for those of you that have one of the new machines, you may want to watch this. I will keep you updated from time to time to see how this works in the future. I have been on a couple various APAP machines over the years, but this is the first time I have ever had this happen to me with an Apap. I guess the moral of the story is to to have your lower setting closer to your ave. pressure and the upper range setting 3 to 4 points above your usual overnight average.
Does anyone else have any comments or know of guidelines that I know I once saw when switching initially from CPAP to APAP re settings.?
Thanks in advance for any info you can supply to this old 30 year veteran of OSA.
