OSA or CSA, how do they determine which one you have
OSA or CSA, how do they determine which one you have
I recently had a sleep study and was diagnosed with OSA. Does anyone know how they determine which one you have? I understand the differences between the two. Do you need to have further studies to determine which one?

Get a copy of your sleep study results; it will show what the diagnosis was based on.

"generally" with CSA, apneas don't occur during REM sleep. The CSA indicator during a PSG is an apnea without thorasic effort, i.e. you stop breathing and your chest and diaphram don't move, that's what those bands around your chest & stomach detect. In OSA, apneas occur with thorasic effort i.e. you're trying breath but no air is getting in. The sensor under your nose obviously tells them when air is flowing, among other things.
