Nasal pillows and cough

Post by stepbill » Wed Aug 12, 2009 6:25 pm

I really like using nasal pillows instead of a full face mask. Am currently using the Breeze and like it a lot. My only problem is I have developed a constant cough with a weird feeling in my throat. Have been to all types of doctors and they can not find anything wrong. They are now thinking about putting a camera down my throat to see whats wrong. Sometimes I think it is in my head but this really started to happen after I went to nasal pillows. Was wondering if anyone else has had this type of problem?

Nope, not me. Rare cough, nothing out of the ordinary. I use the Swift LT nasal pillows.

Is the cough only wanting to occur when the pillows are in place???

You have your answer. The pillows are not the cause of the cough so if it continues ...... you know the answer to that to..

I won't tell you not to talk.. though I will admit I was tempted. Many years ago when I was an x-ray tech I got called out at 2 AM to x-ray this old man's hip (he was 80 something). In the course of discussion I ask him if he had fallen to cause the pain (he was ambulatory without any obvious pain). He told me no, he had not fallen and the pain only occurred when he did this certain little dance step and proceeded to show me by dancing a little jig and kicking his leg high enough that it would have caused me pain to kick that high. Bear in mind it is now 3 AM and I have to be back at the hospital at work by 7 AM. I was not a happy camper. I did tell him that I knew exactly how to stop that pain.. Stop kicking is leg up... While I didn't use all the colorful words I had in my mind I do think he got the overall gist of my thoughts. I did explain to him that people on call in the middle of the night had to come back in the next morning quite early and could I have his home phone number so that I could call him and ask how his dancing was going while he was trying to sleep.

Is it possible that air is leaking out your mouth during the night? I had one night when I must have had my mouth open alot during the night (while using nasal pillows). They say that can cause flu-like symptoms and I definitely felt that way the next day: sneezing, running nose, even watery eyes. So, I think there is a small chance your cough is related if you might be sleeping with your mouth open part of the night.

Option #2 - are you on any blood pressure medicine?

No blood pressure medicine. I do wear a chinstrap and it normally shows 0 leaks when I check the machine.
