ACR-38 USB Card Reader in Canada

Post by TheOneBlackMage » Thu Jul 30, 2009 12:31 pm

I've done all the searching in the forum and online to find a store that sells this card reader locally - I'm in Kitchener, so anything near Toronto would be great. I haven't found anything that looks safe to order from, or that doesn't have ridiculous shipping.

shop.acshk-ca.com - ships from Hong Kong, doesn't have local stock, bad service (wongnog had issues apparently):
Well I've been emailing back and forth to ACS for 6 weeks now and they are useless! They don't have any items for purchase from their Canadian website and they don't seem to be able to ship from Hong Kong. Where did other Canadians buy their ACR38 smart card reader? I found some US online sites that sell it, but shipping is $30-$50!!!!
Most other stores end up going to https://shop.iqbio.com/. Best rate is USPS charging $21 to ship a $32 card reader.

Anyone else have any places in Canada they've ordered this reader from? Would appreciate links, or other stores to check.

Thanks,

BM

I am getting my daughter to look into it - she is a buyer for a hardware/software retailer.
I want one too.

Got an update from ACS - their Canadian supplier has 4 more ACS-38 USB Readers in stock:

Astound Technologies Co.
431 Alden Road, Unit 20, Markham
Ontario L3R 3L4
905-513-9741
sales@astound.ca
http://www.astound.ca

Charging $27.99 + $15.00 Shipping (CDN), or if you're close, you can pick it up at their store in Markham.

Ask for Raymond. He was quick to respond via email, and took my order over the phone. Currently they are modifying their site so the online store is offline.

From what I gather from the forum, the regular ACR-38 reader may have to be modified to handle the Resmed card. You might search the forum for references to that. The specific Resmed reader, albeit more expensive, fits the card directly.

The ResMed data card is quite a bit narrower than the slot in the ACR38, which is designed for a standard credit card.

The ResMed reader has a plastic guide installed that narrows the slot. With a standard ACR38 you either have to peek inside to see where the contents are, or make 2 strips from an old credit card to serve as guides. Not a big deal. If you search you can find a thread with the widths of the strips.

Got my reader from the ACS supplier... I'm more of a DYI guy if I can... You don't really even need to make a guide. I just looked inside to where the PIN contacts were, stuck the card in, and it detected the first time. I may marker the border so I know where to put it easier, but its not a big deal.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Looking forward to reviewing more detail on my results now!
