Eating To Reset Sleep Cycle

General Discussion on any topic relating to CPAP and/or Sleep Apnea.

How does your ease in falling asleep relate to your breakfast habits?

I have no trouble falling asleep at a reasonable time almost every night and I eat a hearty breakfast soon after I awaken.

Eating To Reset Sleep Cycle

Post by Cassandra » Mon Aug 03, 2009 7:17 pm

Oh, just for fun here's a poll. My husband sent me this link

http://www.wisebread.com/how-to-natural ... -overnight

It claims if you stop eating for 12 or 16 hours before the time you want to get up, then get up at that time and eat a good breakfast, you can reset your sleep clock.

Since we were discussing some of us having "off" sleep cycles, I wondered how those of us who consider ourselves night people do the breakfast thing.

I personally sleep better during the morning than I do at night. And I often will not eat breakfast until later in the day. So, I fit in with what the article is saying. I end up eating breakfast around 10 a.m to 12 noon. (So my body may think that is my wakeup time) And that would naturally seem to make my going-to-bed time about 17 hours later--right in the wee hours of three to five in the morning.

If I wanted to start getting up at 5:30 a.m. (which I'm about to have to do to get my son on the school bus), then, acording to the article, I should eat my last meal by 5:30 the evening before, get up at 5:30 and eat breakfast. This would allegedly make my body consider 5:30 my new wake up time. And my going to bed time about 10:30 ?

Of course I am going to try it! It is too intriguinig not to. LOL And I probably won't starve to death. can't try it today, though. I already ate too late.

I realize this is very unscientific. You don't have to tell me how meaningless it is. Still, it is interesting to me, so I would love to see your vote and your comments if you have any. Sorry if there is not an option that applies to you. We are limited in the number of options we can list.

Well that's no fun.

A doc said, "I never had a patient who eats a full breakfast as soon as arising every morning who was obese."

Seems to be much truth to that.

So much truth! But I wonder if it would help to force yourself to eat breakfast if you didn't want it, you know? Or if there is just something about the metabolism of thinner people which makes them want to eat breakfast.

I fixed it so everyone can pick 'or none' for breakfast. I thought that was fair. LOL Though, technically, even if you don't eat til three o'clock, that's still breakfast.

Thanks for that link. My daughter will soon be trying to get the kids from summer schedule to school schedule and it wouldn't hurt for her to add this piece just in case it helps expedite the adjustment. I'm thinking that would be a good time for me to try to get back on track too, so I'll try the eating changes with them. The premise sounds logical to me, since this was my family's eating and sleep/wake schedule most of my life and sleep was never an issue till half way through adulthood. I have read quite a bit about eating in the evening and sleep cycles, though I hadn't read about breakfast playing a part in the resetting. However, we do hear all the time that kids who eat breakfast do better in school. Maybe that's partly because they are more awake.

I don't like being forced into the "or none" category. I eat light which is not the same as "none". None means I feel light headed, get a headache and bite peoples heads off. I can not eat much until about 2 -3 hours after I get up. My stomach just doesn't seem to want to digest things and if I force the issue it returns the contents pronto.

I have screwed up sleep cycles, but regardless of when I actually do sleep I always eat within a half hour of getting up. I almost always have the same thing when I get up too.

Now you have me wondering about insomnia and whether my 9pm snacking is keeping me from falling asleep.

Man, I envy all those people who don't ever have any trouble falling asleep at night!

Nobody, what do you usually have for breakfast? I had a smoothie at 8:00 this morning. It kept me full for a long time!
