Urgent Help Regarding Apneagraphy

Post by Nffc-Girl » Mon Aug 03, 2009 11:00 am

Hi, I have just returned from the hospital with my Boyfriend, he has just had Apneagraphy and ever since the nurse inserted the probe my boyfriend complained of tightness in his throat, finding it difficult to talk and is being sick and constantly coughing. He is finding it very uncomfortable and keeps saying that he feels like something is stuck in his throat.

Can someone offer us any advice? Is this normal? I am very concerned.

Thanks in advance.

I've had many endoscopies and never experienced any such results.
Even had one without benefit of anesthetic the day before my nissan fundoplication.
Surgeon wanted another look and they couldn't put me out because they were going to do it the next day.

Boy that is some kind of fun.

I never heard of apneagraphy ( sp ) and I have no idea how an endoscopy is supposed to tell them anything about sleep apnea.

But would be interested in what they ( the doctor ) expected to learn from an endoscopy. Sleep apnea, I believe, occurs from either a collapse of the upper airway or the lower airway when the tissues and muscles at the very top of the throat relax and allow the airway to close. An endoscope goes way down the throat into the stomach. It would barely be introduced into the airway when it would be in the area where sleep apnea occurs. I wouldn't think they would need an endoscope to see that area right at the start of the throat.

Can you tell us more about it? What were the results?

An apneaography is done by inserting a series of miniature pressure transducers on a catheter into the airway. These transducers monitor the esophageal pressures and from the pressures they can determine if you have central or obstructive apneas and they can also determine the general area of the airway that the apneas are occurring in. This is supposed to be a good test to determine if you are a candidate for surgery to cure your apneas.
