FlexiFit HC431 or 432 FM/mouth breathing

Post by jasminechichi » Sun Aug 02, 2009 3:38 pm

I am a new to CPAP and after many trials and errors I find that the face mask is the way for me. I find that I love to mouth breathe at night. I am using the Resmed Ultra Mirage in a Medium and am able to both nasal and oral breathe.

Even though I am using the Ultra I am still looking at other masks. I have a question about the Flexifit HC431 or 432. I have read a few feedback that said the under the chin fit of the mask prevents users from opening their mask and they must breathe from their nose. Then other reports don't mention that, but say the under the chin fit makes the mask fit better.

Can anybody who has worn the mask(s) tell me their experience? Would you recommend the mask? What about the fit?

I like the idea of the 431 coming with the three size cusions. I don't like the 432 coming with only one cushion and (I have read) the sizes are all off.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I have used both the 431 and 432. I like the small chin flap because it does keep my mouth closed. I like the 432 better due to the extra gray cushion that is included. It supports the silicone cushion better and I find it contributes to fewer leaks. If you find that the gray cushion is not to your liking, then you can remove it and you have a "431". The silicone cushions are the same for both masks. I have progressed through all three sizes of cushions from the large, which was used during my titration, to the small. The small definitely works best for me. Having the three sizes to try would be a nice thing but I would not want to have to do without the extra gray inside cushion. Without it my mask has a tendency to "roll" to the side and leak. I also removed the silicone forehead pad as it tended to give me sinus headaches. Without the pad, there is nothing touching my forehead at all. I would recommend trying to determine the proper size before hand and go with the "432".

Hope this helps.

I like both, but stuck with the 432 , because of the cushion. I only use it when I have a cold, or can't breathe thru my nose.
I can side sleep well with this one.
Good luck finding the "perfect mask"!

I use the 431 for naps and like it. The "under-the-chin" design does not prevent me from mouthbreathing. According to F&P's product literature the under-the-chin design is to stabilize the mask. They do not promote it for stopping mouthbreathing.

I use an UM FF, but a few years ago tried the 432. It feels terrific on, really comfortable, but was useless as a therapy mask. I suppose I could have tried tightening it more, or something, but I'm certainly not using it now, whether or not I can remember exactly what happened then, so I guess my conclusion is that it wasn't good for me.

I have used both and am now using my HC431. I may use my HC432 come winter time as it felt "hotter" than the HC431 when I tried it earlier this summer. I seldom mouth breathe when wearing the HC431 but have no problem mouth breathing when my nose is stuffy. I find my F&P masks much more comfortable than my previous FF masks because of how they fit underneath my chin. The under chin fit improves the mask stability and I seldom experience leaks when sleeping on my side (left or right, but I get lower #s when sleeping on my left side).
