Liberty Full Face with Nasal Pillows (Hybrid)

Post by mcejsul » Wed Jul 22, 2009 9:36 am

Hello all,
Having just received my M-Series Pro (traded in my plus...yeah) and now hoping to get data, I had a question to those using the Liberty Hybrid mask with nasal pillows.
My Pressure is 16
I have a 20 minute ramp that starts at 5.0
I am currently using the Medium Pillows
When my pressure gets high, I commonly have leakage around the nose, how much I don't know yet because I just got a data machine. However, is this a common problem with this style mask. I only have 30 days with which to change my mask. My sleep study was done with a full face mask and worked. That is why I tried the Hybrid, because I could always go back to the full face mask.
Thanks, for any input

Are you using the Liberty or the Hybrid? These are 2 different masks.

I believe it is reffered to as the Liberty Full Face mask with Nasal Pillows, also as a hybrid

I use that mask (The Resmed one: your profile and your link are to two different masks. Your profile points to the Innomed one) when I have congestion, at a pressure from 16 to 20 on my APAP.

I find that I have to adjust things at the high pressure to stop the leaking - so adjust before you use the ramp.

Also, for me, I had to use larger pillows than I expected to get it to seal, so you might try the large pillow at 16.

Good luck.

For the record, a hybrid mask (lowercase H) is the design--half FF and half nasal pillow. The Liberty qualifies. The Innomed Hybrid is a specific hybrid mask.

All that aside, I have used both the Liberty and Hybrid successfully at 16cm.

If the leak is at the front of your nose, it can be sealed by using a loop of small elastic around your head and under (supporting) the "head" of the pillows. The idea is to gently hold that end of the pillows against your nares. Experiment with the the tension. Too much will leave marks and make your nose sore. Too little will not seal the leak (duh).

I use 1/16" elastic beading cord, available in any sewing notions dept. There's also a fix, well-documented on here by Rooster, employing ladies' pantyhose (no, I'm not making this up!)

If that doesn't stop leaks on the sides, rear, or between the pillows; try *my* favorite... NIPPLE GREASE! (It makes me happy just saying it! ) Lanisoh, sold in the "baby" department, is a lanolin ointment marketed for nursing mothers with chapped nipples. (Again, not making this up!!) The slightest hint of it around the edge of your nares where the pillows seat will work wonders. Too much and they slide around, often causing a "blowout" where the pillow is actually blown out of the nostril. But remember (I'm required by custom to say this...), using Lanisoh might make you feel like a boob!

The hybrid is a brand name for an Innomed mask. the first one.
The Mirage Liberty looks like the Hybrid but t is not the Hybrid. The Hybrid has a chin flap that helps keep the mouth and jaw in a position that lessons events. Very comfortable, I might add. The liberty is a different mask altogether. If you try them fide by side, you'll see the difference. it's like saying any 2 full face masks are the same. their not.

I have been using the Mirage Liberty for over a year. My pressure is around 14-16. What I do, is I use a piece of 3M Medical cloth type tape across my nose and around the sides to make sure the pillows stay in contact with the nose as the pressure increases. The tape is nothing special, sold at any drug store were in the bandaids aisle. There are two 3M tapes, one that is plastic and one that is called "gentle" or something that is paper, that is the one you need. The plastic one is too harsh and too sticky.

I've used the Liberty Full Face Mask for a year and a half and love it. I don't use any kind of strap, tape... or anything. As far as leaking.. I have to play with the nasal pillows a bit when I first start the machine but then... they are great. I've noticed that I do have to weekly clean with vinegar or they don't seal as well. I also switch off with another Liberty every 2 nights.

Just a quick note to help with possible confusion---you mentioned above that it's the Liberty mask, but down in your signature where your equipment and stuff is mentioned, you have the Hybrid mask. These two are different masks by different companies. A lot of people can use one but not the other even though they are very similar in design. (I'm one of them; my main mask is the Hybrid, but I can't tolerate the Liberty.)

why in the world do you have ramp starting at 5 if your pressure is that high?

liberty fix ----- by one guy -- viewtopic.php?p=280295#p280295

read that whole thread

as far as your leakage - each person is different and will have different problems - I leak around the mouth with this mask myself not the nose but then my pressure isn't as high as yours either

yes as others have said the liberty and the hybrid are different masks - fix the profile please - makes life easier

Funny how some people are so willing to take the time to slap you about an incorrect profile or comment yet unwilling to to to offer advice about the original question.

Higher pressures cause more problems with mask fit according to what I've read here. Mine was 11 so I can't speak from experience.

The Liberty mask is considered a FFM even tho it is a hybrid style. Some report that they have challenges keeping the pillows in place that calls for some creative additions to the headgear. I urge you to read LinkC and Rooster's posts and RestedGal has posted her creative resolutions to leaks, one of these might work for you with this mask.

Read the posts on leaks with the Liberty (try searching for 'liberty leaks' or just 'leaks'), there are lots of posts from all of us chasing leaks. If you can't resolve the leaks, you might need to change to a traditional FFM.

personally I don't have problems with the liberty nasal parts leaking so I can't relate but whitebeard can so I pointed you to his fix --

guess you don't want to read it -

rested gal has lots of fixes linked ----- if you read my post under "Where a CPAP newbie should start" you will find
Rested Gal has collected links to many common topics

such as batteries, hose hangers, mask fixes

viewtopic.php?t=17435
guess you don't want to read that either

but if you had pursued it and gone to
LINKS to Lab Rat Trophy awards
viewtopic.php?t=15104
you would find LOTS of information

don't put people down for wanting you to show CORRECT information on your profile when they have NO experience with your problem and you haven't bothered to research your problems

i had the Liberty (resmed) mask for about a week until i broke the clip at the front of the mask. So if you do get get, be very careful

Also i found that i needed the marge nasal pillows even though i used medium pillows with the resmed swift LT. As other have said I also found the pillows seem to slip out alot.

Good luck

In reviewing some of the comments and suggestions, I went out and picked up some mild medical tape. I then tried on the mask again in front of the mirror. Having seen the picture of the real hybrid, I wondered if I did not have the pillows tight enough to my nose. I loosened all the straps, pushit further up and re tightend the strap and it looked more natural. I am also going to try the medical tape as well. nest might be the nylon/elastic idea.
Thanks for all the tips.
