mouth taping

Post by buggsy23 » Mon Jul 20, 2009 11:30 am

I have finally adapted to taping my mouth shut. But I seem to have developed a rash next to my lips. Is this normal? Has anyone else that tapes their mouth shut had this problem and did it finally go away. I have only been taping for about a week and only all night long for the last two nights.

What kind of tape are you using? Is the rash where the tape was? If it is a contact rash, the type of tape may make a difference. Just change. Another way to make the tape less damaging to your skin is to put milk of magnesia on your skin and let it dry before applying the tape. It makes the tape come off more easily. (My problem with this method is that the tape will NOT reseal after it is removed once and I sometimes need a little sip of water in the night.)

Good luck,

Cecile

I've also found that once you get that rash, the skin is more susceptible to damage from peeling off the tape. And no one looks good with little scabs around their mouth... even ME!

buggsy23 - this is how I tape my mouth.
I use 3M micropore tape and on the pic
you will see where I put one layer of
Kleenex to protect my lips.
Roll your lips slightly inwards when
you tape. Remove the tape slowly in the
morning.
You can use Lansinoh Nipple
Cream to restore cracked lips.
I cut tape strips in advance and attach
it to cling wrap.

I am using a "Johnson and Johnson " brand of surgical tape. I tried cloth bandaids before that. I think I will try putting a piece of tissue over the area
with the rash and try to be carful removing it. I do not use the same piece of tape when I remove it to get water.

buggsy23 - sorry, I didn't give you the
measurements.
It is - 2" wide tape x 7½" (or more) length
the Kleenex piece is the measurement of
your '(slightly)rolled in' lips.
½" x 1¾" and remember
to fold over the ends - this makes
it easy to remove the tape the next
morning. Going to bed now - GoodLuck !

I found the surgical tape too hard on my skin. Try the gentle paper tape. It might be easier on the skin.

Good luck!

When I applied tape the first time, I rolled my lips in, but found myself biting my lips. Now I just place the tape over my lips. I even make sure that they are slightly parted. But until this rash heals, I am back to fighting with the chin strap. I did look at some of the other chin straps available and might try one of them . I also will try the paper tape the next time.

Newbie question:

What is the advantage of mouth taping over a FF mask? And isn't taping kind of like a FF mask with no anti-asphyxia valve if the power goes off? It seems like you would have no option to switch breathing.

Taping should be a last desperate choice if you have diligently tried several FF masks and absolutely can't use a FF mask.

Sometimes our brain has us breathing through our mouth because the nasal airway is congested or otherwise restricted and not enough air is coming through. If your mouth is taped when this happens, your breathing will be suboptimal.
