Regis Philbin on LIVE has Sleep Apnea, stay tuned for more

Post by Pad A Cheek » Wed Jul 08, 2009 11:02 am

I do not usually catch this show, but today I was checking for news and saw that it is Sleep Week on Live with Regis and Kelly.
Regis showed a few photos of his sleep study he had last night. He said he did not sleep at all, he reported. The report will be revealed tomorrow 7-9-09 on the show. If he has sleep apnea or not will be revealed and perhaps some of the various sleep disorders will be discussed.

Some of what he was saying was useful, and some was not. He really did not think anyone could sleep with all the wires and such on them. He had many people attending him, unlike most of us. He did explain kinda roughly what the wires are for and that the tech could be called to let him go to the bathroom in the night. He also said there is a camera watching his sleep, and Kelly wondered if there was a room over his bedroom with windows where people would sit and watch as he sleeps. All this I know was for laughs, not to help spread the facts about the sleep study.
Regis did also say his doctor told him that he may have to come back again, but he did not have a clear understanding that it would be for titration if needed.

I am pleased to see sleep apnea getting some airtime, perhaps it will help some people who do not understand there is help. Hopefully with more exposure, the facts will also be revealed.

Karen

Hopefully, the people that really need help, see their doctors about it. I am just afraid that with the exposure, not only are genuine sufferers educated, but it creates a hysteria amongst the hypochondriacs and causes people who need sleep studies to wait 2-3 months because of overbooking.

Karen, thanks for the reminder. Sorry I missed it today. From what you described of the show it seems like he was kind of amused and wasn't taking it too seriously. It may have been different watching it. I'm just surprised he wasn't more informed about what was going to take place and the possible titration study to follow. Stay tuned! Dori

My very kind and helpful tech told me that EVERYONE thinks they "didn't sleep at all" at their sleep study. She says she can PROVE I slept.

She also told me it's a weird brain trick that insomniacs go through. You look at the clock, roll over, toss and turn, and look at the clock again. Time has gone by. You're convinced you were awake during that whole time. But you actually weren't. There was sleeping going on, you just don't perceive it.

She says she hears it every day. Er, night.

Anyway, just a tangent.

I'm not surprised that Regis did not know what to expect, nor did he know there would possibly be another night for titration.

I was not really aware of what would happen during a sleep study when I went.

I found out that I would have to do it all again the night I had my first study!

I am not surprised that Regis did not know what to expect or that a second night might be possible. I'm afraid most doctors really don't inform people about the procedure and most of us don't know what to ask when we are about to got through a sleep study, unless they have found this board!!!

Unless I had searched the net, I would not have have known -- and I didn't!

I don't think this board existed when I had my first study in 2002.

Interesting, I would have sworn that I didn't sleep during my sleep study too. I was shocked in the next morning when the tech said I did.

My problem was not so much the wires as that they made me start sleeping on my back and stay there. I always start on my side.

I agree, we didn't know what to expect either, I just didn't think Regis was a mere mortal like the rest of us. Call me starstruck!

I thought I'd been asleep in the beginning and they said, "Nope, you coasted in and out of the edge of sleep." I was so clueless . I did however, know exactly how long I slept with CPAP even waking up to protest pressure increases -- best sleep I'd had in years.

I went to the show's website and invited Regis to the forum.

I don't really expect him to start actively participating, but who knows.

I think it was mentioned that Regis claims he doesn't use a computer, so maybe Joy will join the "wives club".

That could be a whole series of new shows.... "Regis learns to use the computer".
