Good thinking, Isaac.
This forum, which discusses dental solutions for sleep and sleep disorders may suggest a good altrenative to cpap and surgery: http://www.talkaboutsleep.com/message-b ... m.php?f=10

Re: Don't want to Die
So and what does your therapist say about your inability to use this technologie?
You do have a mental health therapist don't you? If not then get your self a referal and deal with the underlying emotional issues that are causing your insomnia and axiety attacks.

It was like reading a cartoon. You seem to have more excuses than a room full of teenagers. You wont die from apnea, but yu may from the excuses.
Re: Don't want to Die
Well, I think the point is that he COULD die from apnea (otherwise why would we all be wearing the things every night) but that on any given night it's not that likely. He obviously has some issues to deal with and I think we should try to help, not be telling him he has to grow up (how rotten is that!) or other things.
Re: Don't want to Die
I wonder if you noticed, Julie, that in my posts (one of them rotten in your opinion) I gave elfman info about surgery with a name and a link and in the other a link to a dental sleep forum (it was Isaac who remebered dental devices could help).
How rotten is that?

Re: Don't want to Die
I could not sleep at all with the nasal pillows. Not at all. Not for any time. Is the feeling of the air keeping you awake?
Please try some different masks, and you may find one that works.
Please don't give up. Please keep trying.
Best,

Re: Don't want to Die
Few death certificates list the cause of death as OSA.
Instead they read Cerebral Vascular Accident (stroke) which was caused by hypertension (high blood pressure) which was caused by OSA.
Or Trauma which was caused by a motor vehicle accident which was caused by excessive daytime sleepiness which was caused by OSA.
Or Myocardial Infarction (heart attack) which was caused by hypertension which was caused by OSA.
And that's just a start to the list.

Re: Don't want to Die
This forum deals out a lot more "tough love" then the other sucky ones I saw. But they also hand out good information, rather then "whine ins" the other ones had. Better tough love then enabling. He obviously has some issues to deal with and I think we should try to help, not be telling him he has to grow up (how rotten is that!) or other things.

Re: Don't want to Die
I would say it is well understood among the old timers that some folk need shock therapy - our dear departed friend Snoredog used to call it 'hard love' (even if I often thought he applied it a bit recklessly). Point is Ozij (as did I ) made some hard points BUT, Ozij also added additional very very helpful links & suggestions.Julie wrote:Well, I think the point is that he COULD die from apnea (otherwise why would we all be wearing the things every night) but that on any given night it's not that likely. What any of us need to avoid is playing 'rescuer' to someone at the point they need some 'hard love'. It just happens that some of us need a belt with a 4 x 2 to wake up. But I can promise anyone who comes here, that when they do 'wake up' they will get incredible support.
The nice thing about this forum is that people do care just as your post shows, the other aspect is that at times we do need the 4 x 2 across the head.

Re: Don't want to Die
Hi
Quote - I have tried 4 or 5 mask styles and CPAP and BIPAP. I cannot sleep with this stuff on my face. I just quit trying.
First of all a question to clarify the above statement - is the problem of the mask due to the mask or due to the pressure.
If due to the mask (ie claustrophobia) then a committed desensetisation program can over come that. This has already been suggested above.
If due to the pressure, then the pressure can be adjusted.
When I think of a mask, I always think of a gas mask, as worn during the first and second world wars. No excuses then, especially if you are under a gas attack. You wear the mask. Attitude is all. And believe me, the masks we wear for sleep apnea are luxury compared to a WW11 gas mask.
You have enough good information and suggestions in the preceding posts to help yourself work through this problem. As a last resort use visualization to imagine poisonous gas in your bedroom, so you had better keep your mask on.
All criticism of this post is directed to my final sentence.
cheers

Re: Don't want to Die
My husband had the surgery in 1987 and in just a few years had to begin using the BiPap machine. All the surgery seemed to do for him was open his throat so that every time he eats food goes down "the wrong way". Wish we had know about the machine BEFORE he had the surgery. Much better choice!
Re: Don't want to Die
bipapwife, I believe your speaking of the UPPP - that indeed is a a surgery best avoided.
