cpap usage and a cold

Post by 678 » Thu Jul 02, 2009 7:39 am

Is it advisable to use cpap while you have a cold? My husband tried wearing the mask while he had a cold but just couldn't breath, he said he could breath better without it. Now he has pneumonia. He has a lot of rainout and I wondered if that could contribute to the cold/cpap non breathing thing or pneumonia. Words of wisdom?

Unfortunately, no words of wisdom.
But a huge amount of sympathy and compassion.

Simply put: my big fear with cpap is getting a cold and then not being able to breathe while attached to the hose.

Here's hoping for a speedy recovery!

I got a bad cold the first week I had cpap. I turned the humidifcation up as high as it could go and used decongestants and it was the easiest to survive cold Ihave ever had.

Pnuemonia is usually and opertunistic bactaria that sneaks in when we are busy fighting a virus. Been there, daughter was there last week.

Try to keep using the cpap - you need all the oxygen you can get to fight the bugs, not less

I become a big time mouth breather when I have a cold, that means that my nasal masks are totally ineffective. For colds and sinus issues I tend to use a full face mask. It helps, big time!!! For minor colds/sinus issues the pressure of a cpap helps open things up. If you have data to support it I would consider raising the pressure of your unit during a cold (I can't, disadvantage of high pressure).
I NEVER sleep without it.
