Three weeks on CPAP followed by consult w/Dr. tomorrow

Post by Richard » Tue Jan 04, 2005 7:33 pm

Any tips on questions to ask? My fatigue is less, my eyes feel tired and I feel tired. Sleep at 11PM, wake up about 3:30 for restroom, reawaken for good about 6:15. I feel as though I am getting better sleep. Using mask all time in bed. Some nasal congestion, relieved a little using a Neti pot before bed. My big question is; "With the results of sleep test showing many years of inefficient sleep due to severe obstructive sleep apnea, now that I am sleeping and feeling better, is my tiredness a result of my body getting reaccustomed to sleep and I'm not there yet? Am I catching up in some manner? Does anyone have any insight on this.
Thank You, Please send private message if you like.

Greetings Richard,

Your situation is somewhat common among apnea sufferes. I am not sure how long you have been using cpap, but in the begining for the first 6 weeks of so you can expirence REM Rebound. REM Rebound is when your body holds on the REM cycle as long as possible and as a result, you can experience daytmie sleepiness.

I went through REM Rebound and it also took roughly a year for me to feel like I was truely getting all I could from my treatment. You body has gone through a lot of trauma and needs time to heal.

Ask your doctor about how long residual daytime sleepiness is expected to be a factor.

The FDA approved Provigil for use with compliant sleep apnea patients, due to eccessive daytime sleepiness. You may wish to ask about Provigal as well.

Best Wishes,

Still Tired

Titrator is correct about REM rebound but understand that lots of REM will not give you that great feeling in the morning. What we require to feel very rested is called deep or delta sleep. The docs also call it restorative sleep. Ask your physician how much delta you obtained during your CPAP titration.

Chances are that you had alot of REM, little delta and different feel that great after the study.

Give it time, keep in mind that if you can still nap during the day, somthing is still fragmenting your sleep at night.

Good Luck
Bob

Hi Richard,

Ask your doctor for a full copy of your sleep study, not just a summary. It should be 10 pages or so. This will come in handy as you learn more about sleep. We can help you dig throught it as well.

Cheers,

I don't know about anyone else, but my energy levels went way up. go to bed at 10 get up at 5 and i feel great. Been like that from the first night. Hell thay didn't have to tell me to use my cpap i begged the tech for the one right after the test to see what pressure they would need to use on me. For the first time in my life i didn't have to drag myself out of bed. Only problem i have now is i sleep like a log
