Question about dreams

Post by hope2sleep » Tue Jun 30, 2009 2:04 pm

Hello all,

I have a question about dreams. I was thinking that if you dream when you are asleep that this is because you have slept well enough to have gotten to the phase of sleep where you dream. Maybe I am not understanding things correctly. Anyway, if you have dreams but they are really weird, unsettling ones ~ that doesn't seem like such a good thing. I don't feel like I am resting very well when I am having that kind of dream. I think I'd rather not have dreams than to have ones that are sort of upsetting. I don't think there is any way to control rather you dream or not or what kind of dreams you have is there?

The commercial on TV about the sleeping medicine Rozerem makes it seem like it is a good thing if you are dreaming.

This is all so confusing to me.

Any help ~ thoughts???

Thank you for your help.

As I understand it you will only remember your dream if you wake during the dream. Shortly after starting xpap I had the first dreams I could remember ever. Once I got my pressure and mask working for me, I no longer remembered my dreams(if I was having any) and started sleeping through the entire night.

I know that I have remembered dreams that have not awakened me.

But without CPAP, and even with it (3 weeks in), dreams have been extremely rare.

Not having dreams is a pretty good indication of sleep apnea actually if other symptoms are present. People who don't dream, don't get into REM sleep. That means that they're really not sleeping well.

Rozarem may help you to get to REM sleep and thus may cause you to dream more. I'd bring it up with a pharmacist the next time you see one.

In terms of the bad dreams, it could indicate a chemical imbalance or some other psychological condition. If it is interfering with your ability or want to sleep, I'd bring it up with a doctor. Do you have any depression or any traumatic things that have happened in the past?

Dreams are also thought of as ways of "debugging" your mental functioning which is why not having them is so dangerous. So yes even weird dreams are a good thing. You can write them down and see if any of the symbolism makes sense to you. Often just acknowledging the issues helps them go away. Sometimes they are just small issues but have gotten under your skin.
