Humidifier level vs. AHI

Post by buzzkill58 » Tue Jun 16, 2009 10:29 am

I have been using my CPAP for about two weeks now. I don't have the software for my machine, but I have been checking my numbers via the menu. I have noticed something I think is a little odd and I am wondering if it just part of my body adjusting to the therapy.

If I set my humidifier level to "2", my AHI drops below 5 (from 1.8 to 3.3). But I have problems with rainouts. If I set my humidifier to "1.5", the rainouts go away and my AHI goes up to around 8.4. For now, I am going to leave my humidifier at 1.5 and see if my AHI (my problem is HIs... no AIs) comes down.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? I am not too worried at the moment because based on what I have read on here, I still have a few weeks before I adjust to the therapy. I thought it was odd how my humidifier seems to impact my AHI.

Thanks,
Buzz

Perhaps your nose closes up without the humidity... Have you tried covering your hose. You don't have to buy a fancy hose cover. I cut the toes out of three old baseball sock and taped them together to cover the hose.

Many of the posts on that subject usually report the opposite.......lowering the humidifier setting drops the AHI numbers.
It may depend on how long you were experimenting with each of the settings. Since you're just starting therapy, it's not unusual to see considerable swings in the numbers. So, it may not be a direct "cause and effect".

I use strictly "passover" humidification......no heat.

Guess I am bouncing around while adapting... Last night my AHI was 4.8 with the humidifier set to "1.5"
