Encore Pro smartcard reader issues, works once per USB port

Post by Ender519 » Mon Jun 15, 2009 8:15 pm

I swear I've seen a post describing this issue, but can't seem to find it with search function.

I have Encore Pro and Infineer/Mako DT3500 USB smartcard reader. The issue is that the device only seems to work once per USB port, basically when it installs the driver for that port.

So I've got about 8 USB ports, and the first time, the LED light turns green when the card is inserted and life is good.. but next time I try to use it, it stays red until I move it to another USB port. After I run out of USB ports I have to completely uninstall the driver and start over. This is a monumental pain in the ass.

Has anyone found a solution for this? Thanks in advance!!

If the card is in the reader, it's supposed to be "red" until you start the download and then it'll turn green.
Don't plug it into a hub.

Hi Den,

I'm plugged straight into my machine.. no hubs. The problem is the light never does turn green and if I try to download the data it just says it can't find the smartcard reader. If I move to a new port, the light goes green as soon as I insert the card and then it's able to download the data successfully.

The problem is more likely, Vista or Win7's ability to load the driver to the same usb port. In XP, I have no problem as long as I use the USB port that I used when I installed it, if I use any other port it gets lost. (I have 12 USB 2.0, on my computer that I use) It seems to me that Vista and Win7 both like to issue USB finds on the fly, so to speak, and they do that very poorly. The problem seems to be in the way the OS handles the USB port assignments, something that XP did well. Progress, Bill seams to have forgot how to spell it. Jim

On XP, I have to uninstall the driver and then let Windows find the driver and re-install it every time I use the program!!!!! It has always been plugged into a hub (as are 15 other peripherals). It worked fine until SP3 was installed! Yes, it is a pain. Since I use VMWare Fusion to get to Windows XP, it is not possible to use the program at all as uninstalling the driver results in a complete shut down of the computer. Yes, I wonder why this driver (or the program searching for the driver) are so much different than all other programs?
